WRESTLING: No problem with Arizona State

The following is a press release courtesy of Iowa State athletics communications.

AMES, Iowa – No. 8 Iowa State (9-2, 2-1 Big 12) won eight of 10 matches in a 27-6 victory over Arizona State (7-7, 2-2 Pac 12) in wrestling action Friday night in Hilton Coliseum.

Bonus points were awarded to Earl Hall (technical fall at 133 pounds) and Michael Moreno (major decision at 165 pounds), as the Cyclones won their 1,041st dual in program history.

Third-ranked Michael Moreno scored the first Cyclone points with a 12-4 major decision over ASU’s Jacen Petersen at 165 pounds. Moreno wasted little time by recording three first-period takedowns. His 18th victory of the season featured five takedowns in all.

At 174 pounds, Tanner Weatherman’s takedown with under a minute left in the third period was the deciding factor in his 4-1 victory over ASU’s Ray Waters. Weatherman, ranked 12th nationally, improves to 20-7 on the year.

No. 2 Kyven Gadson picked up a decision at 197 pounds with a 12-7 victory over Luke Bean. Gadson got things rolling in the first period by scoring a takedown and a 3-point near-fall on an over-under backside trip. He then tallied three more back points when he maneuvered a cradle in the second period.

Gadson improves to 21-1 this year and 81-11 in his career.

Quean Smith tacked on three more points for Iowa State with a 6-3 victory over Chace Eskam at heavyweight. Smith recorded a pair of takedowns in the win, including key takedown on a single leg with 1:03 left in the bout. Smith improves to 14-10 this season.

ISU’s Kyle Larson won a tight match over Ares Carpio, 2-1 at 125 pounds. The match was tied at 1-1 heading into the third period, but Larson moved ahead with the winning point when Carpio was called for stalling with 1:00 left in the match.

Third-ranked Earl Hall continued his hot streak for the Cyclones, winning his 11th-straight match on a technical fall over Judson Preskitt at the 6:20 mark (17-2) in the 133-pound match. Hall tallied a trio of 3-point near-falls in the dominating victory, his 23rd of the season.

The most exciting match of the evening was at 141 pounds. ISU’s Dante Rodriguez raced out to an early 4-0 lead, but then found himself down 9-6 heading into third period. Still down 9-7 with under a minute left in the match, Rodriguez secured a single leg followed by a cradle to record the takedown and 3-point near-fall. Rodriguez then hung on for the 12-10 decision.

Gabe Moreno capped off the match win with a 9-8 victory over Christian Pagdilao at 149 pounds.
