Wrestling: Iowa State Falls to No. 4 Oklahoma, 27-11

The following is a press release courtesy of Iowa State athletics communications.

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team (6-2 overall, 1-1 Big 12) fell to No. 4 Oklahoma (7-0 overall, 2-0 Big 12) on Sunday at Hilton Coliseum, 27-11. In the main event of the dual, No. 2 Kyven Gadson downed the Sooner’s No. 3 Travis Rutt, 3-1.

Three periods was not enough to decide the winner of the highly anticipated Gadson-Rutt match-up, as the score was deadlocked at 1-1 after the first 7 minutes. Gadson prevailed 19 seconds into the first sudden-victory period, scoring a takedown to secure the win and preserve his 22-match dual win streak.

Gadson is 22-0 in dual matches the last two seasons. The win moves the Waterloo, Iowa, native’s record to 15-2 overall and 7-0 in duals this season.

Heavyweight Quean Smith followed Gadson’s lead, notching a 13-2 upset of No. 14 Ross Larson. Smith dominated from the get-go, putting on an offensive clinic in the first period, scoring three takedowns and a three-point nearfall. He led 9-2 heading into the second period. The freshman managed the match from that point on en route to the major decision.

Junior Michael Moreno, ranked No. 10 at 165 pounds, got back on the winning trail after not placing at the Southern Scuffle with a 13-0 major decision over Oklahoma’s Clark Glass.

Following a scoreless opening period, Moreno was relentless in the second after a quick escape, scoring a takedown and two consecutive three-point nearfalls to take control of the match. The victory moves Moreno to 18-5 overall and 5-2 in dual contest.

Iowa State returns to the mat Friday, Jan. 17, as it host Rutgers (9-2 overall, 3-0 overall) at 7:00 p.m. CT in Hilton Coliseum.
