No. 5 Iowa State takes down No. 21 Arizona State 28-10 on the road

No. 5 Iowa State Tops No. 21 Arizona State, 28-10

CHANDLER, Ariz. – No. 5 Iowa State took eight of ten matches from No. 21 Arizona State Friday night to start the new year with a 28-10 victory over the Sun Devils. Cody Chittum and Yonger Bastida both earned wins over top-5 opponents to highlight a fun night inside Hamilton High School.

Resiliency and toughness were the takeaways for Iowa State (7-1, 0-0 Big 12) against the Sun Devils (1-3, 0-0 Pac-12). Cyclones trailed in matches at 125, 157, 174, 184 and 197 pounds but eventually came out on top.

Iowa State won the takedown battle against Arizona State, 22-10.

Kysen Terukina got ISU on the board first at 125 pounds with a 12-6 decision over Tristan Mascarenas. Terukina gave up the first takedown of the match but pushed the pace and tallied three takedowns for himself in the win.

After Arizona State picked up a major decision at 133 pounds, Anthony Echemendia picked up a 19-4 tech fall over Cody Foote at 141 pounds. The Cuban piled on five takedowns and a set four of near fall points to secure the victory in 4:51.

A Sun Devil pin at 149 pounds put Iowa State in a 10-8 hole, but that would be the last match Iowa State would lose.

Cody Chittum made a statement to the college wrestling world with an upset of No. 4 Jacori Teemer at 157 pounds. Chittum allowed an early takedown but responded with one of his own in the second period and followed it with a tough ride out. The Tennessee native was a hammer on top erasing a minute of Teemer riding time to finish the match with over 1:30 in his favor.

It was business as usual for David Carr after the intermission. He racked up five takedowns in a 19-4 tech fall over Nicco Ruiz at 165 pounds. At 174 pounds, MJ Gaitan came out on the right side of a scramble with time waning in the third period to secure an 8-4 decision for the Cyclones.

Will Feldkamp overcame an early deficit against No. 29 Tony Negron at 197 pounds. Feldkamp gave up the first two takedowns of the match but, after an escape, pushed the pace and ended the first period with three stall points. The Cyclone was tough on top and sealed the deal with a third-period takedown.

Julien Broderson got to his offense late in an 11-4 decision over Jacob Meissner. The Cyclone tallied three takedowns in the win, one at the end of the second period and two in the third period.

In the dual’s featured bout, No. 3 Bastida took on No. 5 Cohlton Schultz at heavyweight. Bastida got an early takedown against Schultz, who made his season debut for the Sun Devils, and held on for a 4-3 decision.

It’s a quick turnaround on the road for the Cyclones. No. 5 Iowa State is back in action Sunday afternoon for its Big 12 opener against California Baptist.
