The following is a press release written by Iowa State athletic communications.
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Kyven Gadson improved his dual record on the season to 2-0 with a 5-4 win over Iowa’s Nathan Burak, but the Cyclones (0-2, 0-0 Big 12) fell to the No. 4 Hawkeyes (6-0, 0-0 Big Ten), 32-3.
"Tonight’s dual was disappointing," head coach Kevin Jackson said. "We had chances to win tonight at heavyweight, 165 and 141. At some of the other weight classes we didn’t give ourselves a chance to win. We got outfought and outhustled tonight. Iowa’s signature technique is to out hand fight their opponent and they did that tonight."
Gadson, a redshirt sophomore, is ranked No. 15 at 197 and is off to an impressive start in the 2012-13 season after missing the majority of last season due to injury. Gadson got a pair of takedowns in the first period to jump out to an early 4-1 lead, holding on to take a 5-4 win.
At 285, No. 15 Matt Gibson (7-2) of Iowa State nearly upset No. 5 Bobby Telford (6-0) as he scored a reversal early in the third period to take a 2-1 lead. Telford then countered with a reversal of his own late in the period. He then rode out Gibson to get the win by way of a 3-2 decision.
At 141, No. 18 Luke Goettl’s upset bid fell short against No. 13 Mark Ballweg, with a 4-1 loss. Ballweg was able to counter any Goettl attacks late as the sophomore attempted to close the gap towards the end of the match. At 165, Mike Moreno (6-1) battled against No. 20 Nick Moore (4-0) in another tight match that came down to the wire. Moore was able to fend off Moreno’s final shots to hold on for a 3-2 win.
"When the lights were on tonight, we stopped wrestling in every position," Jackson said. "We’re back at it in a couple weeks and we’re going to continue to push forward."
Iowa State will be back in action on Dec. 16 at Hilton Coliseum to take on North Dakota State at 2 p.m.
