Van Der Kamp earns national honor

The following is a press release sent out by Cyclones.com and Iowa State athletic communications.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State punter Kirby Van Der Kamp has been named the College Football Performance Awards punter of the week as the West Des Moines native had his third outstanding game in as many contests in the Cyclones’ 3-0 start.

In Saturday’s 37-3 win over Western Illinois, Van Der Kamp’s punts left the Leathernecks to start drives from the 8, 1, 16 and 20-yard lines. Fifteen of Van Der Kamp’s 19 punts this season have landed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. Van Der Kamp averaged 47.2 yards per punt against Western Illinois.

Van Der Kamp was the Big 12 Player of the Week after Iowa State’s 38-23 win over Tulsa Sept. 1. The Golden Hurricane was forced to start drives off punts at the 2, 9, 15, 8 and 13-yard lines.  In the Cyclones’ 9-6 win at Iowa on Sept. 8, Van Der Kamp pinned the Hawkeyes after punts to start drives at the 19, 10, 16, 37, 12 and 10-yard lines.

Van Der Kamp can hit the long ones if necessary. The junior had a 59-yard punt against Western Illinois. His career average of 43.6 yards per punt is the best in school history. He has 36 career punts of more than 50 yards and seven of more than 60 yards.

Most incredibly, Iowa State opponents have not yet returned a punt for positive yardage this season.
