AMES, Iowa – The Board of Regents, State of Iowa approved a proposal from the Iowa State University Athletics Department Wednesday to build a 60,000 square foot, two-story complex to house the Cyclone football team and its operational functions.

Construction on the $20.6 million structure, located adjacent to the Bergstrom Indoor Practice Facility, will begin in the summer of 2011 with completion by fall of 2012.

“We appreciate the support of Board of Regents to move forward with this project. It is extremely important to the long-term success of our athletics department,” Iowa State A.D. Jamie Pollard said. “We have outgrown current space and consolidating operations of the program in one place is important for the success of our football team and its student-athletes.”

The football team and its support units are currently in the Jacobson Athletic and Olsen Buildings.

“From both a daily operational standpoint as well as a recruiting perspective, the new facility is a major upgrade for our football team,” Pollard said. “We are eager to get started with construction of a building that will be a great addition to our facilities portfolio and an aesthetically pleasing addition to the Bergstrom Athletic Building.”

The new complex would run the full length of the Bergstrom Indoor Facility on its east side and include player and coach locker rooms, a team auditorium, position meeting rooms, coaches’ offices, a reception area, strength and conditioning facilities, sports medicine center, video operations and an equipment room.  Plans also call for a tunnel connecting the new complex to the playing field in Jack Trice Stadium.
