To say that this is a big week for the Iowa State wrestling program would be a massive understatement. This is a giant week!
The second-ranked Cyclones and their first-year head coach Kevin Jackson will look to upset top-ranked Iowa on Sunday, in the biggest regular season match of the season. Everything will get started in Hilton on Sunday a 6 p.m.
Earlier today, Jackson met with members of the local media to talk about the match-up. Here are notes taken from the press conference.
– “Obviously, this is a very exciting week for us.” That was Jackson’s opening comment. Jackson said that he circled this date from the day that he took the job in Ames. “Our goal is to be national champions. The national championship runs through Iowa City,” he said. “We circled it. I know that they circled it.”
– Since coming to Ames, Jackson has spent a lot of time discussing how his team’s goals are to be aggressive and to score points. Jackson hammered that message home again today.
– Nick Fanthorpe will is currently listed as questionable at 133 pounds at this pint in the week. “We’ll see. I am going to test him out a few more times this week,” Jackson said. “Right now, I’d say it is 50-50.”
– Nick Gallick is questionable as well. “I don’t know if I’d put him out there right now or not,” Jackson said. Gallick recently suffered a “deep tissue bruise” at the Harold Nichols Open. That’s why he didn’t wrestle at the Omaha Open.
