David Caulker made waves in November when he announced that he would be flipping his commitment from Iowa to in-state rival Iowa State.
He posted his announcement with a simple caption; “Change of plans.”
On Wednesday, December 21, he’ll officially sign his National Letter of Intent to play football at Iowa State.
“I just felt like when I committed to Iowa, I should have considered Iowa State more,” Caulker said. “I just felt like, what really led me to make the decision at the time I did was I didn’t want to go the rest of my life thinking, ‘Oh, what could have been. I should have done that.’ I just decided if this is what I want, then I’m going to do it, and I committed to Iowa State.”
The 6-foot-4 edge prospect from Des Moines North High School is rated as a top 10 prospect in the state of Iowa by 247Sports.
He took an official visit to Iowa State for the first time over the weekend.
“It’s encouraged because, going on my visit, it was more than I expected – and I expected really good things,” Caulker said.
During the visit, Caulker met with Iowa State defensive line coach Eli Rasheed to go over just what his time in Ames will look like.
“We had a meeting talking about scheme and stuff like that,” Caulker said. “At first they were projecting me as playing the leo position, but now they can see me playing the boundary end. It really depends on how my body grows.”
Caulker also visited alongside Iowa State’s newest commit of the 2023 class in Zaimir Smith, who announced his commitment publicly Sunday afternoon.
With each being defensive line prospects, the pair quickly bonded.
“He’s a really cool person,” Caulker said. “We kind of bonded within like probably a few hours. Knowing him for two days felt like I’ve known him for a few years.”
“(The visit) felt good, especially knowing I was supposed to take (a visit) on the 12th of June,” Caulker said. “Even without taking that official, I just couldn’t wait to sign that paper.”
Fortunately for him, that’s just a few short days away.
