The following are a selection of quotes from the aftermath of Iowa State’s 10-7 win over Iowa on Saturday in Iowa City. Some of the quotes have been edited lightly for clarity and brevity.

Matt Campbell on the rivalry win…

“I think from my end, that’s what’s great about rivalry football. I think we can also put it in perspective, it’s the second game of the football season. I think that’s a little bit of what’s tricky about this game sometimes is, you know, it’s a great rivalry, it’s a special rivalry, and yet, it’s still the second game of the season.

From our end, if we let this shape us, rather than define us, then we can use what we learned today and grow from it. I think those are the things about playing a big game early in the season like this.

From our end, I think just seeing our team continue to grow at a rapid pace right now, maybe at times where we haven’t done that early in the season through the early parts of some of my tenure here. I think that’s an area we’ve really worked to address. That probably is the greatest reward of seeing our guys persevere through adverse situations today.”

Campbell on being able to run the ball against Iowa’s defense…

“A lot of credit to Coach (Tom) Manning and a lot of credit to Coach (Jeff) Myers. I thought there was a really good plan. You’re talking about going against an elite linebacking crew as well. We know that and certainly a really, really good front seven. I think at the end of the day, you gotta go block the people and you got to be relentless running the football and you know, I thought, for the most part, Jirehl did. His character of, man, turning it over on the one and that’s tough, and yet his ability and resiliency to come back and some of those runs were critical for this football team in the heat of the moment.”

Hunter Dekkers on the message to the Big 12…

“We’re gonna play a full 60 minutes. There’s no time that we’re going to take off.”

Dekkers on Xavier Hutchinson…

“He just gives me confidence. Just to know that a kid like that can be open at all times. It gives me a lot of confidence.”

Hutchinson on the meaning of this win to Campbell…

“To be honest with you, I really don’t know. Because Coach Campbell is a very simple man. Obviously, you know, he wants to win the game, but at the same time, he just cares about us reaching our full potential and what you hear him say is what he truly means.”

O’Rien Vance on the crazy final moments and unsportsmanlike penalty on the Iowa State bench…

“It is what it is, like, you can’t do nothing about it. Like we got to be more aware of our surroundings, we can’t rush the field and create that penalty. But at the same time, like it was just like we’re in the moment and trying to make sure we got the job done.”
