Carr Wins 100th Match, Iowa State in First Place After Day One at Cliff Keen Invitational

LAS VEGAS – Bonus points were the theme for Iowa State on Friday at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The Cyclones won 19 matches with bonus points and sit in first place in the team standings with 88.5 points after the first day of competition.

David Carr won his 100^th match as a Cyclone with a victory in the quarterfinals to become the 39^th member of Iowa State’s century club. Among wrestlers with 100-plus victories, Carr ranks third in school history with a .971 win percentage behind only Cael Sanderson (1.000) and Dan Gable (.990).

ISU has seven wrestlers alive for day two, four in the semifinals and three in the wrestle-backs. Along with Carr, Evan Frost, Will Feldkamp and Yonger Bastida punched their tickets into the semis.ADVERTISING

Anthony Echemendia, Casey Swiderski and MJ Gaitan are still alive on the back side in the Consolation Round of Eight.

Frost, Carr and Bastida rolled into the semifinals with major decisions in their quarterfinal matches. Feldkamp shocked the room with a fall over Oregon State’s No. 2 seeded and No. 4 ranked Trey Munoz while trailing 3-1 in the first period. Bastida announced himself as a legitimate heavyweight threat with a 13-5 major decision over Ohio State’s No. 7 Nick Feldman.

Echemendia and Swiderski both battled back after one-takedown losses in their quarterfinal bouts. Both secured major decisions in their consolation matches. Gaitan advanced in the wrestle-backs with a medical forfeit from top-seed Shane Griffith of Michigan.

Iowa State had 19 victories come with bonus points on day one – five pins, six tech falls, and eight major decisions.

Cody Chittum and Julien Broderson were both eliminated in Session II.
