RECRUITING: What Iowa State is getting in Carson Van Dinter

Iowa State earned its ninth commitment to the 2024 recruiting class Wednesday night in Carson Van Dinter, a safety out of Wisconsin set to aid in the defensive backs room.

The prospect is expected to play in the middle safety position at Iowa State, following his senior year at Kaukauna High School.

“He’s just that kind of natural athlete,” Kaukauna head coach Matt Binsfield said. “Very good at basketball and probably the best part about him, he’s a tremendous competitor. It doesn’t matter what (sport) he’s playing. He gets it after it. He’s very intense and a hard-working kid as well.”

Iowa State originally offered Van Dinter on Tuesday and less than 24 hours later, he had announced his commitment.

The entire process started during an in-school visit Iowa State conducted, where Binsfield got Van Dinter in front of offensive line coach Ryan Clanton.

“I think Iowa State was at our building to recruit another (player) and I said, ‘Hey why don’t you look at (Van Dinter),'” Binsfield said. “The offensive line coach met him, he went down to camp and the rest is history.”

Binsfield added that Van Dinter was not at all shy of contact.

His competitive nature comes out on the football field behind an amount of physicality in his game.

The competitiveness showed in Van Dinter’s stint with the track & field team that helped his school win a state championship.

“For us, well he’s probably the most athletic kid in the school,” Binsfield said. “Long, but still pretty strong kid that runs really well. He came out for track very late and ended up being a part of our state championship 4×100 relay team.”

It helped answer one of the question marks to his scouting profile, as well.

“One of the questions on his recruiting was how well that he runs,” Binsfield said. “When you get out on the track, you know. Those numbers translate everywhere. I think that really helped him and he wanted to prove what he can do.”

The 6-foot-3 commit will join the Cyclones next fall.
