Two of Steve Prohm’s key staffers will remain at Iowa State.

Assistant coach Daniyal Robinson and director of basketball operations Micah Byars will be retained by new Iowa State head coach T.J. Otzelberger, a source close to the situation confirmed to Cyclone Fanatic Friday night. The news was first reported by the Ames Tribune‘s Travis Hines.

Otzelberger will be the third head coach Robinson has worked under at Iowa State. He was first on staff with Otzelberger under Greg McDermott from 2008 to 2010 then returned to join Steve Prohm’s staff in 2015.

Robinson is credited with being the lead recruiter behind Iowa State’s highly-touted 2018 recruiting class, which featured NBA Draft picks Talen Horton-Tucker and Tyrese Haliburton. He was also the lead recruiter for current Cyclone big man Xavier Foster and Cyclone signee Tyrese Hunter.

Byars has been an integral piece of Iowa State’s basketball program since joining the staff under Fred Hoiberg in 2011 as the director of player development. He was retained by Prohm after Hoiberg left in 2015.

Otzelberger will have two other assistant coaching roles to fill in the coming days.

  1. Not making a unicorn case for DRob, but he’s a midwest guy. I advocated against William Small a long time, was obvious he didn’t have it in recruiting or x/o. James Kane a FL guy, long shot fit. Monte, Naz, MT, Hali, THT, Ejim, Burton, McKay, Nader – Midwest. Everyone complained about our recruiting grounds, DRob is a midwest recruiter.
