Recruiting Roundup: June 16, 2018

Iowa State football picked up its 10th commitment when cornerback Derrick “DJ” Miller (St. Louis, Mo.) made the pledge last Saturday.  Iowa State offered over a year ago on May 17th, 2017.  He visited in January and March, before the Cyclones traveled to the Lindenwood camp the first weekend of June.  More on his commitment from Jared here.

There were 15 commitments by football prospects with Iowa State offers this week.  The Cyclones hosted their first official visitors of the 2019 class, with at least eight visiting this week or next and three more targets taking unofficials.

BASKETBALL LATEST:

*** ISU hosted small forward Tyler Wahl (Lakeville, Minn.) on an unofficial visit on Tuesday.  Wahl is rated as the No. 126 prospect in the 2019 class by 247 Sports.  Iowa State, Minnesota, Northwestern and Wisconsin are thought to be his leaders.

*** One of Iowa State’s top point guard targets,  Tyrell Terry (Minneapolis, Minn.), committed to Stanford on Sunday.  The staff had been in contact for awhile before offering on May 7th.  That leaves Kira Lewis (offers from everyone) and Kyle Sturdivant (haven’t been linked to in months) as the two true PG offers left on the table for 2019.

FOOTBALL LATEST:

*** Iowa State made the top 6 for cornerback Nicktroy Fortune (Lawrenceville, Ga.) last Saturday.  Joining the Cyclones in the competition for his services are Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Rutgers, Virginia, and West Virginia.  He was offered on October 9th and has been high on the Cyclones since.

*** The Cyclones became the first offer for 2020 defensive end Blaise Gunnerson (Carroll, Iowa) after a strong showing at camp on Saturday.  South Dakota State was also in attendance at the camp and offered.  Gunnerson became the fourth target classified as “warm” to Iowa State by 247 Sports.

*** Athlete Taj Dodson (Fairburn, Ga.) announced a top 10 on Twitter Sunday which included ISU.  The January 16th offer is one of 16 from P5 schools.  Dodson will be an early enrollee in December, so should have an accelerated timeline.

*** There are three new high interest targets for the Cyclones for the 2019 class this week.  Offensive tackle Grant Treiber (Sioux Falls, S.D.) camped at ISU this month.  Cornerback Jarrad Baker Jr. (Melbourne, Fla.) and TE Nolan Matthews (Frisco, Texas) are both currently in Ames for their official visits.

***  Iowa State handed out its first offer for the class of 2022 to wide receiver and safety Domani Jackson (Corona, Calif.) on Sunday.  The 8th grader already holds offers from Oregon State, Colorado State, San Jose State and USC.  He reportedly ran a 4.46 40 at a camp this summer.

*** Offensive tackle Brayden Rohme (Gilbert, Ariz.) is currently on an official visit.  Rohme is from the same high school as 2018 quarterback signee Brock Purdy and 2019 wide receiver commit D’Shayne James.

*** Other official visitors that are on campus or will be next week include JUCO OLB Caleb Johnson (Fullerton, Calif.), top RB target Jirehl Brock (Quincy, Ill.), CB Alex Hogan (Houston, Texas), ATH Kenny Logan (St. Augustine, Fla.) and WR/CB DK Blaylock (New Deal, Texas).
