Tyrese Haliburton is Wisconsin’s Gatorade Player of the Year

The Iowa State men’s basketball season came to a bitter end last night in the Big 12 Tournament, but glimmers of hope continue to brighten the horizon for 2018-19 and beyond.

The latest positive development: Incoming freshman guard Tyrese Haliburton today was tabbed as Wisconsin’s Gatorade Player of the Year.

Haliburton, a 6-5 point guard at Oshkosh North, scored a combined 60 points in a pair of regional tournament wins over the weekend for the Spartans.

He’s considered the nation’s 164th-best recruit according to 247 Sports and ranks 30th at point guard and fourth among Wisconsin’s top talents.

Haliburton chose ISU over offers from Nebraska, Minnesota, Cincinnati and Northern Iowa, among others.

Here’s what Cyclones coach Steve Prohm said about the budding star on signing day:

“I’m excited to add Tyrese to our program,” Prohm said in a statement. “He’s a long, really versatile and highly skilled player with a great basketball IQ. His IQ is off the charts. Tyrese is a pass-first point guard that I think, as he gets bigger and stronger, could be compared to Diante Garrett. He can make 3s and as he continues to fill out, he’s got a chance to be a special player.”
