RECRUITING: Iowa State lands commitment from four-star receiver

Four-star wide receiver Joseph Scates has long been one of Iowa State’s top targets in the lead up to next month’s national signing day and that pursuit has paid off. Scates announced his commitment to Matt Campbell’s program Sunday afternoon following an official visit to Ames this weekend.

“The visit was amazing,” Scates told Cyclone Fanatic. “What stood out to me the most was the smooth environment and the fan love shown. Had a great time with (Matt) Campbell and the coaching staff.”

Scates, who is considered the No. 25 wide receiver in the nation and No. 136 player overall by Rivals, is Iowa State’s highest-rated 247Composite commit of the Campbell era. He is the Cyclones’ highest-rated commit since Allen Lazard in the 2014 recruiting cycle.

The 6-foot-2, 186-pound Dunbar, Ohio native chose Iowa State over offers from Michigan State, Alabama, Oklahoma, LSU and a host of other Power 5 schools. He is the Cyclones’ third wide receiver commitment in the 2018 class joining Oklahoma product Sean Shaw Jr. and Texas prospect Carson Schleker.

Iowa State now holds 21 commitments in the 2018 recruiting cycle and has the No. 49 recruiting class in the country, according to 247Composite. It is the seventh-best class in the Big 12.

Stay tuned to Cyclone Fanatic for more on this story.
