WBB: Iowa State falls short against OU, 74-69

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State was unable to complete its comeback against Oklahoma, falling to the Sooners 74-69 Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. The loss drops ISU to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 play, while OU improves to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in league play.

The Cyclone effort was led by 21 points from Bridget Carleton, her 15th career game over 20 points. She was joined in double figures by Madison Wise (15) and Adriana Camber (12).

ISU bounced back from a third-quarter deficit of 10 and a fourth-period deficit of 11 to cut the Sooner lead to one possession on multiple occasions, but slow shooting from 3-point range, a 7-of-28 afternoon, hindered the Cyclone efforts.

How it Happened

Both teams lost important players early to foul trouble, as both Bride Kennedy-Hopoate for Iowa State and Gileysa Penzo of Oklahoma found their ways to the bench with a pair of fouls within the first two minutes. OU led for the majority of the first period, but ISU was able to string together an 8-0 run to pull ahead 17-13. Bridget Carleton had a nice up and under lay-in in the final seconds of the first to give the Cyclones 19-18 first quarter edge.

The Sooner defense helped break open a tight second quarter, going on a 10-0 run powered by three Cyclone turnovers to pull ahead 30-23. Foul troubled continued to plague the Cyclones as Meredith Burkhall and Adriana Camber both got third fouls, causing the Cyclones to go deep into the bench. The Sooners continued to push their advantage, as Gabbi Ortiz got OU a 3-pointer and a reverse lay-in in the latter stages of the first to get a 42-34 halftime lead to the visitors.

Iowa State was able to force its way back into the contest when a Flagrant 1 on Vionise Pierre-Louise resulted in a five-point possession for the home side via three Carleton free throws and a Kristin Scott put back. A Burkhall lay-in brought OU’s lead down to one at 50-49, but OU surged to an 8-0 run to close the quarter to get ahead 58-49.

ISU could not find an avenue back into the contest, as the Cyclones struggled to hold onto the ball, committing four turnovers in the fourth period. Iowa State had a late rally in them, cutting the Sooner lead to three at 72-69 on a Madison Wise 3-pointer, but ISU could not take the next step as the Sooners held their cool at the line to get the win.

Players of Note

Bridget Carleton struggled from the field, shooting 5-of-15 from the field, but was able to rack up points from the charity stripe. The 15th 20+ point game of her career saw Carleton go 11-of-13 from the charity stripe. She also had nine rebounds, a career-high seven steals and three assists.

Madison Wise had her fourth game in double figures in the last five, finishing with 15 points, which including three 3-pointers.

Adriana Camber bounced back from her first-half foul trouble to finish with 12 points, all coming on 3-pointers.

Cyclone Quick Hits

*Iowa State has hit a 3-pointer in an NCAA-record 717-consecutive games.

*Madison Wise finished with 15 points, her fourth game in the last five in double figures.

*Bridget Carleton recorded 21 points. It was her 15th career game over 20 points. She has been in double figures every game this season.

*Carleton recorded a career-high seven steals, her previous high was five against Texas Tech her freshman season.
