WILLIAMS: Prohm stays hot on the recruiting trail

WINTEREST, Iowa — Steve Prohm and his staff are absolutely scoring up the recruiting trail right now. On Monday night, Iowa State picked up its third verbal commitment for the class of 2017 in less than a month.

Joining Wisconsin forward Terrance Lewis and Mississippi post KeyShawn Feazell is combo guard Darius McNeil, a 6-foot-2 guard who hails from Houston.

Iowa State beat out quality high major programs to land all three players and should have a class ranked in the top-20 after its newest acquisition.

All three commits were important in their own ways:

— Lewis got the ball rolling.

— Feazell proved that Prohm’s staff would actually be able to pull talent from the Deep South.

— McNeill is a highly touted versatile guard who Prohm will be able to mold into whatever needs the team has.

Together, the three prep prospects will fill the needs of a roster that has six scholarships available for the class of 2017.

What’s next?

Iowa State will make a strong run at Lindell Wiggington, another guard.

Regardless of how that turns out, expect Iowa State to have at least a couple of scholarships available for the spring period to add a JUCO, a transfer, a grad-transfer – basically the best players available.

In an offseason where Iowa State is set to lose proven players like Monte Morris, Matt Thomas and Naz Mitrou-Long to name a few, Prohm has his eyes set on reloading at Iowa State, not rebuilding.

If you had concerns about Prohm’s ability to recruit to Iowa State, it’s time to be silenced. Just a couple of months before signing day, the man and his staff have pulled together a top-20 class while snagging prospects from all over the country.

That’s impressive.

Steve Prohm will sleep well tonight, as he should.
