Notes from Iowa State’s week one depth chart

Matt Campbell released the first in-season depth chart of his Iowa State tenure on Monday. The following are some noteworthy tidbits from the Cyclones’ week one two-deep.

*** Nine true freshmen and six redshirt freshmen are listed.

*** True freshmen running backs Kene Nwangwu and David Montgomery will backup redshirt sophomore Mike Warren.

*** Freshman Chase Allen or junior Sam Harms will handle the backup tight end role behind senior Justin Chandler.

*** Freshman Sean Foster is listed as the backup left tackle behind Jaypee Philbert.

*** Trever Ryen will be the starter at the M-position, punt and kick returner. True freshman Deshaunte Jones will back him up as the M and punt returner.

*** Philbert (LT), Patrick Scoggins (LG), Brian Bobek (C), Nick Fett (RG) and Julian Good-Jones (RT), unsurprisingly, make up the starting offensive line.

*** Mitchell Meyers is listed as the starter at defensive end. Jhaustin Thomas and JD Waggonner are listed as backups with an OR between them.

*** True freshman Jamahl Johnson will backup Demond Tucker at nose guard.

*** Gabe Luna will start at Leo and true freshman Jaquan Bailey will be his backup.

*** True freshman Arnold Azunna will be the backup behind Jomal Wiltz at one cornerback spot. Jay Jones will backup Brian Peavy at the other.

*** Duke graduate transfer Evrett Edwards is listed as the backup at right safety behind redshirt freshman Mike Johnson.

*** Sophomore Carson Epps or senior Dondre Daley will start at the Z-receiver spot.

*** Kyle Starcevich is listed as the holder for place kicks. True freshman Steven Wirtel or redshirt freshman Quinn Sonntag will handle the long-snapping duties.
