INSIDER: Side conversations from media day

Quickly, some nuggets gained from side conversations at Iowa State’s football media day that was held at Jack Trice Stadium on Tuesday morning.

*** Matt Campbell was not embellishing when discussing Mike Warren’s backups at running back during his press conference. It sounds like both David Montgomery and Kene Nwangwu have been “unbelievable” during the first five days of camp. There really is very little worry about the guys behind Warren within the coaching staff. Stay tuned. Both of these guys could potentially play as true freshmen.

*** More Kool-Aid … We all thought that the secondary would be solid this year but apparently it’s going to have some quality depth as well. Duke transfer Evrett Edwards has shown that he will contribute early on. Thadd Daniels is a different player this fall compared to what the staff saw in the spring. This will likely be the best secondary Iowa State has seen since 2005. Now, the key will be what goes on in front of them.

*** Tymar Sutton will play at linebacker, as long as he is healthy. I’m not sure that is the case right now.

*** The real scoop on the backup quarterback position is exactly what Campbell said in his press conference. Zeb Noland apparently is as good as advertised. “If the season started today, he would beat out Jacob Park,” one source said. But remember that Park sat out all of last season and missed some early days of camp with the flu.

Park also apparently made a couple of throws on Monday that made the staff rewind tape two or three times. The dude can sling it.

There is no competition – at all – for the top spot though. Joel Lanning is the guy.

*** Last but not least, a WILD Big 12 expansion rumor that has to do with Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Colorado State. I don’t believe this for a second but these are always a blast to speculate about.

Carry on with your Tuesday.
