Cyclone Fanatic is counting down the days until Iowa State’s season opener against Northern Iowa by bringing you a stat, former Cyclone moment or any other random tidbits every morning to help countdown the days.
The first meeting between the Cyclones and the Panthers happened all the way back in 1899. That game resulted in a 0-0 tie. Iowa State didn’t claim its first victory over UNI until 1902, when the Cyclones crushed the Panthers 52-0.
The series would cease to exist for awhile as the two teams stopped playing each other after the 1950 meeting, in which Iowa State won 26-8. The two teams decided to restart the series in 1987.
Iowa State has faced the UNI 29 times, with a record of 21-5-3 against the Panthers.
Iowa State beat UNI 31-7 in last year’s season opener at Jack Trice Stadium The Panthers beat Iowa State in the 2013 season opener 28-20.
Iowa State will face off against UNI to open the 2016 season on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. at Jack Trice stadium.
