AMES, Iowa – Iowa State redshirt junior Deonte Burton earned his second consecutive Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honor after averaging 18 points and shooting 72.2 percent from the field in the Cyclones’ two games last week.
Burton scored 19 points against Oklahoma just three days after tallying 17 points against Coppin State. He has increased his scoring total in every game since becoming eligible. Burton hit 13-of-18 field-goal attempts last week, including 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from 3-point range.
Against the Sooners, his 19 points came in 20 minutes of action. Burton also tallied 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals for the week. He is averaging 13.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and shooting 67.7 percent from the field on the season.
West Virginia’s Jaysean Paige was named Big 12 Player of the Week.
Burton and the Cyclones return to action Wednesday when they play host to Texas Tech. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
