Big 12 issues statement on ISU’s handling of court storming

AMES — The Big 12 issued a statement this afternoon regarding Thursday’s post-Iowa win storming of the court at Hilton Coliseum.

The verdict: ISU handled its postgame celebration protocol properly.

Veteran Des Moines Register reporter Randy Peterson suffered a broken leg as fans streamed onto the floor, but he noted on Twitter and on The Dan Patrick Show this morning that he was not stepped on after the Cyclones completed a 20-point comeback to win 83-82 on Monte Morris‘ floater.

"“I was not trampled," Peterson reiterated in a Register article. "I was knocked to the ground but as soon as I was on the ground, there was security all over me.”

Peterson underwent surgery to repair fractures to his tibia and fibula.

After the game, both ISU athletics director Jamie Pollard and Cyclones men’s basketball coach Steve Prohm offered well wishes to Peterson.

"I hate that Randy got hurt," Prohm said after the game. "That’s terrible."

The Big 12’s statement released this afternoon reads as follow (italics theirs):

The Conference has reviewed the Iowa – Iowa State men’s basketball game and determined the host school handled its postgame celebration protocol consistent with Big 12 Conference Rules related to sportsmanship and ethical conduct. Game management staff appropriately handled their primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of the teams, coaches, officials and administrative staffs. We were sorry to hear about the unfortunate accident with Des Moines Register reporter Randy Peterson and wish him a speedy recovery.

The Conference considers this matter resolved and will have no further comment.
