Cleveland.com report: Former ISU star Rutland found dead

The sad news of former ISU running back Hiawatha Rutland‘s death began circulating on social media last night.

Now Cleveland.com, has a report confirming that the fan favorite from New York City has drowned in Lake Erie.

Rutland, 33, was last seen at 7:30 p.m. last night, according to the article.

He was swimming, but began to struggle 90 feet from land, authorities told Cleveland.com.

Rutland rushed for nine touchdowns in an ISU career that was was cut short by a severe knee injury he suffered early in his senior season.

Several other former Cyclones have died tragically in the last 11 years, including defensive lineman Jason Berryman, who was found dead in January.

Others to pass away much too young in that span: Ennis Haywood, Cris Love, Stevie Hicks and Justin Eilers.
