That certainly didn’t take long.
Bryce Meeker, a 6-foot-5, 295-pound offensive line prospect out of Cedar Rapids Prairie received an offer during Iowa State’s camp on Saturday. On Monday morning, Meeker knew that he wanted to be a Cyclone.
“Everybody that I have ever talked to about committing has always said to sleep on it, wake up the next morning and that I would know,” Meeker said. “I woke up this morning and I definitely knew after talking to some people about it last night. That is where my heart is. That is where I want to be. That is where I am driven to go and that’s where I want to get better.”
Iowa State’s relationship with Meeker has been growing strong roots for years now. The offensive tackle that could potentially be moved inside has taken multiple unofficial visits to Ames since his sophomore season.
Now, according to Rivals.com, Iowa State has snagged (assuming that Meeker ends up signing with the Cyclones) the state’s top ranked recruit three years in a row (Jake Campos, Allen Lazard).
“I look at the top recruits and I say, ‘I want to play with these guys. These are high quality guys,’” Meeker said. “They are great football players and it is an honor to be a part of this.”
And Paul Rhoads’ reaction to the news?
“He told me that he was excited about it and to work my senior year as hard as I can to come in as a freshman and get better,” Meeker said. “He wants me to come up on a Junior Day and help him recruit, talk to some people and hopefully make the team better.”
Meeker also plays basketball and participates in track for Cedar Rapids Prairie so that will keep him busy during the winter and spring months before arriving in Ames next June.
“I feel like I can always do more,” Meeker said. “My goals are to go into the season and do everything that I can for me team and to be a leader.”
Meeker also noted that he has cancelled the rest of his visits and camps for this summer, which included trips to Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa. Meeker has already camped at Iowa and did not receive an offer.
Meeker meets Mangino
While it’s true that Meeker has been around Iowa State’s program quite a bit over the past couple of seasons, he hadn’t met new offensive coordinator Mark Mangino until this past weekend at camp.
“I got a great feel from him,” Meeker said. “I already knew the other coaches but he is definitely a guy I want to play under. It will be an honor to play for him.”
That’s two for 2015
Meeker, whom Rivals.com ranks as a three-star prospect, is Iowa State’s second-known commitment for the class of 2015. He joins Naperville (Central), Ill. linebacker Bobby McMillen as a Cyclone pledge.
