UTAH NOTES

–       Utah only has four returning starters back from last year’s defense. Still, they’ve been salty thus far giving up only 246 yards per game. The Utes are ranked seventh nationally.

–       Utah’s Terrance Cain is technically the most efficient quarterback in America at this point in time but don’t expect him to start next Saturday in Ames. Cain filled in admirably for starter Jordan Wynn, who missed time against UNLV and New Mexico due to an injured thumb. Both quarterbacks are solid. Wynn, a sophomore, has thrown five touchdowns to one interception in two games against Pitt and San Jose State. During Cain’s two starts over UNLV and New Mexico, he threw for five touchdowns without an interception, along with 486 yards.

–       Utah senior wide receiver Shaky Smithson is the nation’s fifth best punt returner. He’s averaging 21.36 yards per return.

–       Keep an eye on Utah linebacker Chaz Walker, who is averaging 10 tackles per game for the Utes.

–       Utah’s offense is averaging 44.25 points per game. That ranks them sixth in America in scoring offense.

–       The Utes have outscored their four opponents in 2010 177 to 51.
