Why are people down on Mahoney?

The kid is a pretty good kicker. Sure he had a horrible game against Mizzou but other than that he had a really solid season. It is hard to fault a kicker when he has to kick bombs all year.

He made 7 kicks in a row at the beginning of the season and than he started missing but look at these kickers

Utah - 53 yards

OU - 45 yards
50 yards

Kan - 51 yards

Neb -49 yards
55 yards

There aren't many kickers in college football that are going to make those kicks. In my opinion he only had one bad game this year as a Cyclone and that was this past weekend against Missouri, but does that make him a bad kicker? I don't think it does. If we go off that, that Leonard Johnson is a bad cornerback because he got torched against Iowa. Alexander Robinson is a bad back because he couldn't run against Colorado.

I feel very comfortable with our kicking game going into next year

He made 1 out of his last 8 field goals. That's why.

THIS! First of all, the two he missed against Mizzou are kicks he SHOULD be making, and if he does, its a completely different game going down to the end. You get better as the season goes on, not worse...

Are you suggesting we should have punted or went for it on forth down? The way it turned out, the team would have been better with either option.

1 out of 9. Sure

But 7 out of 9 of those were from 45 yards or further. Come on guys they weren't easy kicks

He is under 50% for the years and that is really bad for a kicker.

Kicks under 45 yards he is 7 for 10!

He was 7 for 8 before his one bad game. That is good for a kicker!!

You tell me when the last time we have had a kicker that was so good inside of 45 yards ever. Please tell me

Paul Rhoads would not have put him out there if he didn't think he could make those kicks. Mahoney has proven in both practice and in warm-ups that he can kick long field goals.

Fact of the matter is a majority of our team improved as the season went on, Mahoney did not. He had a problem focusing and mentally preparing for his in-game kicks down the stretch. I'm not sure I have ever seen Rhoads lay into a player quite like he did to Mahoney on Saturday after his second miss...

This is the Big 12 son! Not the MAC.

Go play intramuals!

Seriously though coach has faith in him thus the reason for him kicking long FG's but he is actually really good inside 45 if you look at his stats. I am not going to be critical of a college kicker missing from outside of 50. Heck NFL kickers who get paid to do it can't even kick 50 yarders at a clip of 50%. I think they are just under this year from that distance

I agree, they even said that during the Nebraska game. If he makes the short ones vs Missouri, this isn't even being talked about. But, the Missouri ones were brutal.

He was 3 for 5 from beyond 50 last year and only 1 for 5 from beyond 50 this year.

As he should. He played awful against Missouri. But other than that game, he played good this season and his stats back it up. But if you want to rag on a kid for missing 50 yarders, I guess you can. I won't. I have seen to many ISU kickers who couldn't make anything inside 40 yards. Mahoney has and does

Are 45 yard FGs tough to make? Sure - but it's part of the job description, and if he can't make them anymore, it's time to make room for someone who can. Not only that, but it certainly didn't help his cause that he flat out shanked the short FG on Saturday.

Yep, one bad game. One bad game that is the last game and so Iowa State fans will go all off season talking about how bad Mahoney is.

But the fact is that he came into the game 7 for 8 at FG's inside of 45 yards. Tell me that isn't a good season for a kicker

Adam Benike was pretty accurate inside 45 yards (as Yelk would kick the longer field goals) I'm trying to find his stats.
