Part of reconciling this ongoing debate is us being honest. Manning isn't an awful coordinator. But we are surrounded in this league by some pretty brilliant offensive minds: Riley at OU, Gundy at OSU, I hate that i'm typing this Herman at TX, Baylor historically....... In the last 15 years in our league the offenses set a high bar.

Your stats indicate Manning is the best we've had in a long time. (one could argue our past coordinators never had a Purdy though)

I do wish coach Manning's in game adjustments were more like Heacock. We truly hit the jackpot in John Heacock.
There are times that Manning is really good at being OC. But then there are times that he really leaves you scratching your head. That being said, he's probably the best we've had in a long time and thats strictly going off numbers.

I stopped before I got to the Barney Cotton years. Tom Manning averages more points per game and yards per game than any coordinator in our recent history. He also averages marginally better than the year Campbell called the plays himself. All this whining about him would make me believe the opposite. For you haters, which of our prior coordinators are you taking instead? I post to remind everyone that the grass always appears to be greener with a different offensive coordinator, be careful what you wish for.

Mangino wasn’t here 3 years I believe. I could be mistaken, but swear it was a year and a half.

Yep, looked it up.

He was let go in late October 2015. I remember him tweeting his enjoyment of the KSU meltdown.

I think Manning overall is a pretty good coordinator. Certainly does some things that drive me nuts, but lets be honest, that's almost every fanbase with their offensive coordinator.

My point of this thread is that every coordinator I've personally seen at ISU made head scratching decisions. Every year there are people asking for the offensive coordinator to be fired no matter who the coordinators have been. Yes there were calls for Tom Herman's head too.

Manning finds ways to put up big numbers. Bigger numbers than Campbell alone with virtually the same people. I do think he is learning, although slowly. I actually saw us run the QB sneak on 4and1 this year! I'm also tired of 3 TE sets, all the motion causing penalties, and not getting Purdy outside of the pocket. However, I'm still appreciative of the fact that he's had the best offenses since I started watching the cyclones in the Barney Cotton days.

I believe we've seen the CF team rank head coaches before. Would love to see their take on best coordinators ever. I can't imagine anyone taking the defensive crown from Heacock, but I only know modern era. Wally Burnham would be my number 2 on defense.

Steve Loney. Would love to see what he could do with our current talent.

fwiw, the JJ Moses reverse to open against Iowa was probably the best play call in the history of the program.

I was in the south end zone that day. It was a thing of beauty to see Iowa get sucked in.

While I feel that we could do a better on offense, the issue has always been the OL under Campbell. It looks like there are some good young guys in the program, but just not enough guys that are ready to play. Having a couple guys hurt really sucks.

I think it may of been Campbells second year that the Oline was terrible to start but by the end of the year they were pretty good. Manning was still the OL coach.

I think that Loney is the right answer. But, I didn't mind the job that McFarland did. He turned around an OL in 2 years and it's taken this staff 5. I do think that Manning is behind the 8 ball right now down 2 starting OLs and a starting WR. You have those 3 playing and the result Saturday is probably different.

If we talking 'modern era' the CF team is probably too young to consider Earle's '76 staff #1. Second in the nation in YPG and holds that stat for the Cyclone record.
