Nittany, who cares if it is a name coach. Clearly Floyd and Eustachy could coach, that is all I care about.

Nothing is wrong with Mac, but you can't say that he was a national name. It was the same way with Floyd and Eustachey, all of them were good coaches prior to coming to ISU, but they weren't big time "names".

They are big names now. Greg will be too. I think we got the best coach available. Seriously. At the time, I wanted Turgeon, but he never went anywhere. I think G Mac is a great coach, nationally known or not.

I know everytime we recruit a coach for basketball we all get excited about some of the big names that could possibly come to ISU, but end up having to hire a lessor known coach. I'm assuming that we'd have to take an even lessor known coach for football. I say that assuming that we couldn't afford to pay a top coach (especially if Mac doesn't quit) and we don't have a great recruiting base.

I thought McD was one of the largest names interested in ISU? I think Pollard tried to get the UW-Milwaukee coach, but if I'm not mistaken, it was a big deal to get McD before Iowa and KSU got him.

Honestly, you say it like we're asking a coach to turn an ISU team around that's as bad as it was in the 90s. It's a completely different beast, and I'd be willing to bet that a great coach from D-1AA or a mid-major D-1A would love to coach for ISU, especially if we retain some of the weapons we have next year for their senior years.

We're never going to lure big time coaches away from big time schools. Unless you're a program with the budget of OU, LSU, etc., you have to find those diamonds in the rough yourself.

Honest question

Who do you believe would be willing to take oveer the clones football team if we did get rid of Mac?

I know everytime we recruit a coach for basketball we all get excited about some of the big names that could possibly come to ISU, but end up having to hire a lessor known coach. I'm assuming that we'd have to take an even lessor known coach for football. I say that with the belief that we couldn't afford to pay a top coach (especially if Mac doesn't quit) and we don't have a great recruiting base.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what options would be available to ISU?

One, Iowa State is paying a competitive salary. Two, It is in a BCS conference. Three, it is a good school academically. Four, they have an aggressive forward thinking AD, who will raise money aggressively.

I think that Iowa State will be an attractive job, maybe not in the same vein as Michigan State, but, we can hire a quality football coach.

And you have to remember that this fanbase is starving for success. We have lapped at a 6-7 win trough, and now are looking at going winless in the conference for the second time since Austin Flynn has been here.
And yet there were 35,000 plus in the stadium to watch this garbage.

2000 bought that indoor practice facility, and 2003 took all of that momentum away.

2005, even with the disappointment of the close losses, led to 30,000 season ticket sales.

People will spend money if you give them hope.

I heard a rumor that Cotten already tried resigning not too long ago but Mac wouldnt let him or something like that. I havent seen any official statements on it but that was just the latest word that I heard... has anyone else heard anything like that? Not that I would blame him, Id prolly want to save face and jump ship on my own before I got canned. An absolute embarassment today though, That had to be one of the most pathetic games/game environments I have ever been in. The stands were as quiet as I have ever heard them (not that I blame em, there wasnt really anything to cheer about). I mean are you serious, blown out by KANSAS AT HOME?!?! And how do you only get a field goal in the first half and then not score at all when your given the in the red zone twice? that was just an overall horrible performance and you could see the fans and the players completely quit on Mac and Co. today. Should be interesting to see what JP has to say about this one.

Believe me, I was there when we played temple in the 90s and it was a matchup of the worst teams in the country, bare none. We are a long way from that and we have Mac to thank for that.

There have been multiple improvements to the facilities and the enthusiasm regarding fan support. The football program has become a decent team year in and year out.

But my question was an honest one, if we get rid of Mac, as many on this board have asked for, who would be a possible replacement?

Mac has been an incredible recruiter for a school that had zero history and little fan support. When you fire a guy who has built your program out of nothing, how is that received in the coaching community?

We've got Mac signed through 2010 at $1.1 Million per year. JP's undergoing an aggressive renovation of all major facilities and a lot of that money is dependent upon the revenues of the football program. We're in no position to pay another coach an equivalent amount of money as Mac. Currently, the lowest paid coach in the Big 12 is Ron Prince at $750,000 for 4 years. Can we afford to pay a total of $1.85 Million for a football coach next year? I say no.

Holy Mother of God. I didn't go to the game because of a study-abroad orientation, but I was disappointed I didn't get to go because of what I thought was ISU's chance to right the ship. But this is plain pathetic. This isn't nearly as bad as losing to Baylor last year, because at least then, there was some freaking hope.

Mac has got to go.

Three embarrassments: Iowa State the worst, then Colorado, and then Iowa. Colorado is favored by seven next week.

1000 season tickets were sent back before the game to JP!!! You have no choice in two weeks and next year will be an even bigger zero.

The Missouri game is going to be sweet.........At least the tailgating was good again. This has been the best year for tailgating. I liked it so much I left at halftime with about 10K others and never came back into the stadium.

To many people are questioning what kind of coach we could get, questioning how could a turnaround be possible. You have examples all over the country...K-State under Bill Snyder, Louisville, Colorada State, hell even Boise State. These were never hotbeds of football. All have the same thing in common; they recruited dynamic head coaches. These were not big name hires, they were men with a vision. D1 football is the biggest moneymaker. Sometimes you have to spend money to make money. That is the big picture. If JP needs to fall on the financial grenade..so be it. He has a vision and enough confidence that he (alongside a new coach) can get the job done.

This was Kansas people...KANSAS. And they gave us our worst loss of the season.

Not Oklahoma. Not Texas. Not Iowa.

But Kansas.

So much frustration, so much embarassment.

It's time to clean house, not at the end of the season...not after next week. But right now.

I felt like I was watching a Cyclone football team from the '90's today...

I'm with you, 22. I've been a Cyclone for 23 years and that was as bad as anything Criner or Walden ever had to offer. NOW is the time.

This is awful and if I'm Jamie Pollard, I had my mind made up at halftime regarding next year.

Pollard made two presentations in the NW corner of the endzone, one to a retiring Des Moines librarian and one to the retired ISU track / cross country coach. When he came out the second time, in the early third quarter, we thought he might be making the public announcement that Dan was done! We were also wondering if the librarian could take over the play calling responsibilities, maybe install the single wing or something of the like!

I was at the game, for the first half. No way was i going back into that place to watch that pathetic team! Bret Meyer has giving up, talk about no desire! Baum can't catch a punt. Singleton couldnt play pass coverage on a goat. The O-line is a bunch of special ed kids. The linebackers are not good. "Juice" Johnson is not ever going to be good. Cotton is the worst play caller on earth. Fitch has the team running terrible routes. Dan is not going to coach next year. This simply is a bad football program, not a bad team, but a bad program. Not one single thing is going right in the program. The recruiting is bad, the coaches are bad, and the talent level is bad. The ship needs to be righted because its going south in a hurry!!!

When your team quits on you, like McCarney's did today, it is time to find someone else to lead your kids. Unfortunately, with the financial committment ISU has in Mac, he isn't going anywhere. Nothing more you can really say, just a sad day to be a clone.

What if they were trying and this is the best they can play with who is left?

Whoa!! 1,000 season tickets sent back to JP, is that true?????????????????

If so, "the wheels are completely off the manure spreader"

That is what was stated on post game show. Why would they lie about that.
