I've never understood how teams struggle to stop this play? Hike to the QB, he stands still for several seconds, and then just follows his blockers. Usually no misdirection or anything. It's so SLOW to develop and they usually run right where you think they are going to run.
They've been so consistent at it that it's definitely a skill they look for and teach. It's almost like the they escort the QB more than block for him

Vampire is going to get Ertz killed this year. He's their only offense.

That's the biggest issue with KSU's offense, and why you don't see hardly anyone else using it.... it kills your QB. Ertz has had several bad injuries in his career there already, and wouldn't doubt if he'll get injured again this season.

With that being said, Lanning would have been a great KSU QB in that offense. But I'm glad we have him at LB, that's for sure.

In the middle of the 3rd quarter I noticed that the QB was responsible for 182 yards of 184 yards of total offense. By the time we play them he will be out injured if they keep that up!

Mental mistakes (stupid penalties) cost the Cats the win last night. The effort was there but they could not get all 11 offensive players on the same page most of the night. I suspect the players will pay a bit more attention in practice the next couple of weeks. The defense actually played its best game of the season.

I don't know, but I do know that Klein destroyed us doing that.

Okay, I was 758 miles away with 20,000 other EMAW's when most of you here were cheering for the SEC. My gosh, the SEC. Seriously, Iowa State, the SEC?

So anyway, I just got back to the desk.

Vandy was quicker than K-State. Their defensive backfield was nails. Our receivers were truly bad. And Vandy took away our special teams advantage. Jesse Ertz had a bad day. Mostly because our guys did not catch the ball. And then there was that touchdown that was overruled by the SEC replay officials. Whew!

Now, I've been here before - losing an early season game. E3's 2003 championship team lost to Marshall and two more after that. But corrections will be made. Y'all will soon be wondering what happened to the State that lost to Vandy.

I'd guess now that oSu and OU will be in the championship game. K-State will lose two more, probably.

The problem is it looks like a pass play so it freezes the LB's and Safeties from attacking the line which allows the OL to get a good push downfield. But why not just run blitz it then you ask? Well as soon as you do that they throw in the wrinkle where they release the TE down the field and throw it over the top of the run biting defense.

7 penalties for 68 yards - very surprising for a Snyder-coached team. BUT, Vandy had 5 penalties for 50 yards -- not a huge discrepancy between the 2 teams. If both teams play an error-free mental game, does KSU win, instead? Not sure you can jump to that conclusion, because the other argument is that if V-bilt played penalty-free, they would have won by more than 7.

We need to run that play with Lanning in the red zone.

Put me in the group that was cheering for KSU. I had KSU -4. Thought it was an easy cover.

Exactly! Teams are forced to play gap disciplined defense. If they bring blitzers, it's easy to get burned.

It's like in basketball when you overplay the wing, and they start running backdoor cuts for layups.

The offensive lineman also do a really good job selling it as a pass play and coax the DT's to over-pursue the play on their pass rush. It takes a well disciplined d-line to make that play ineffective.

Yeah, and then next thing you know they're escorting the QB downfield as moving screens. It's a tough play to stop if KSU executes it well.

Imo Vandy did a good job of being the aggressor and thereby dictating. The play works better for KSU because they capitalize on risk aversion.

Vandy made several 'back side' tackles, which was an effective speed strategy, obviously. Their coach is a defensive whiz. He had them well prepped.
