I'll be darned if my engineering degree is from the university of Iowa. I've worked too hard to.get a degree from a half rate institution.

it should be more the other way around, sports teams don't define the university. Iowa State University would be the flagship school. We have more state of Iowa kids than any other school, we are centrally located, we have a presence in every county in the state through the extension service and we have more living alumni in the state than any other school.

So it would be Iowa State University at Iowa City or Iowa State University at Cedar Falls. So that would put us in the Big10, I guess. As for kinnick stadium and carver arena, just store corn or soybeans in them.

IF they would ever do this, I venture the schools would become the State University of Iowa at _____. That way there would be no "superior feelings" for having your universities name be chose and we could all have the best built in Iowa hog joke of all time (SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUIIIIIIII!)

Really long-term ISU is also near Des Moines, easily the state's largest metro area. Regardless of what may or may not happen, ISU has greater growth potential IMO.

Eastern Iowa reminds me of (an extension of) the suburbs of Chicago, with a lot more space between. In Iowa City in particular the way things were set up a long time ago, when it was expected to become (and remain) the state capital, IMO limits future growth. The river divides things, and there are a couple of big bends to boot, a lot of the streets are dead ends, taxes are high, and so on. Most people there like things as they are. They don't want more growth. Cedar Rapids does, and it has some things going for it, including more manufacturing. But I just don't see it ever becoming as big as Des Moines (comparing metro areas that is).

Dead thread walking
I am replying to the OP and thread title.
The University of Iowa at Ames is the stupidist thing I have ever heard of . Iowa State University is a premeire university with its own identity. ISU needs to stay that way and it will. I am sick of you clone fans with all of you gloom and doom. Like I said in another post. If you guys think you will end up without a decent BCS conference and quality Athletics situation then you have gone to the birds.

ISU will survive this bump (and yes I mean bump) in the road. SO what if you don't get to play Nebby. You will still have us to beat up once in awhile (hopefully we beat you guys more but recent history says otherwise) and ISU IS a respected Institution on the sports front.

I know you hate people like me meddling around but I happen to love college sports and it sucks to see so many decent Iowans miserable about somthing that likely will NOT happen. I can't stand your AD but he is really really good at his job. He will come up with somthing just fine. Now quit writing Eulogies for your school and get on with life. The sun will come up and things will work out. ISU is just too big of a fish to let die...and that WILL NOT happen.

I know this may be way out there but with all of the financial problems the state is having will Iowa push for a system like Wisconsin now that the Big12 is breaking up. Iowa at Iowa City as the flagship with Ames next followed by Cedar Falls.

Since most Iowa fans now see us as a definite second tier team why wouldn't they push to make it official? I wouldn't want this but I could see it as a logical argument from a Hawk fan as a way to have solidarity in the state and allow them to be "the" school.

Ehhhhh.

and then go study the history of the state universities between about 1988 and 1994. Here's a good starting point...

There has NEVER been a year when more Iowa high school seniors have enrolled at Iowa than at ISU.

I have co-workers who have interviewed engineering candidates from Iowa and Nebraska, and they were basically described as losers.

Also a few years ago I heard a engineering student at Iowa say that he went there because the math classes were easier.

I've known only one engineer from Nebraska. The guy was a genuine borderline retard.

Civil engineers around here are about 70% KSU, and 10% ISU, KU, and 'other'.

The new University will be called the University of Iowa State with a campus in Ames and a campus in Iowa City. During even years the football team will be in Iowa City and the B-ball team will be in Ames; during odd years the football team will be in Ames and the B-ball team in Iowa City...This will end up on the table. If ISU does not end up in a tier one conference, recruiting woes will start the downward spiral. The Big 12 really failed the member schools by not staying competative in generating revenue and dividing it equally. I can't wait to hear J.P. talk about the lack of loyalty in athletics in this new age.

If this were to ever happen (which it won't) It would be called "The University of Iowa- Ames"...too many people of this state allign themselves with the U of I for the politicians to rebrand it...(I don't care if they are Tavern Hawks as you call them, instead of students/alum...they're VOTERS.)

And for the record I think Cedar Rapids is one of the dingiest, dirtiest places I've ever been...couldn't pay me enough to live there...Iowa City is a great place in my opinion though.

AND good luck..they would never merge the two just because ISU athletics is a losing venture...it all comes down to financial fan support...do you go to the bowl games? do you adorn your house in Cyclone merchandise? Does your wardrobe have a cardinal and yellow tint to it?

All those things are yes answers for Iowa fans...and it's part of the reason why we have such high revenue...and don't say "it's because of the Big Ten Network you guys don't make that much otherwise..." ever thought that Iowa makes it's fair share of money for the conference?? Our BCS bowl trip made the conference a few more million alone...

Actually, and I am sure this is hard for a lot of people like you to understand, this has nothing to do with athletic performance nor academics. It also isn't about how many fans want to get out of the cold and will go to bowl games. It is all about television sets, and how Fox can get the BNN on basic cable packages to collect subscription fees.

As far as revenue, Iowa got a 22 million dollar check from the BNN. Also, the Big 10 has had two BCS participants pretty much every year, so Iowa has benefitted from that much more than they have helped with their two bids (although that is impressive).

The other thing that you need to remember is that this is brand new thing, the rules have not been written yet.

And remember that Notre Dame is still the goal for the people that run the network. But basic business principles dictate that in order for a business to survive they have to continue to grow. The BNN will continue to try to expand their cable areas. Right now it appears that they are looking to the East, and Iowa will be safe for the time being.

But Iowa brings the least to the table businesswise as anyone that will be in the Big ? after expansion. Declining population with what's left being older, and a poor economic base is not exactly a recipe for providing anything for the BNN.

That is not as secure of a position as you may want to believe it is.

C'mon guys... Can't we put the Hawkeye Inferiority Complex aside for a little bit? Seems like maybe there's some bigger issues in Cyclone Nation at the moment- like the fact ISU may not have a conference by the end of the week. Just sayin'...

Don't care about his post....love his screen name.

Correct. This whole deal should make Iowa fans uneasy, not elated.

This thread does show one important thing - ISU is completely and utterly alone in this fight. Even though we are all Iowans, most Iowa fans do not care what fate lies ahead for ISU. You would think that their allegiance would be to the state first and the conference second. Outside of Iowa fans, peoplpe that are not involved in sports don't understand why it's a big deal. We are in this all alone. If we make it through to another BCS conference, we'd better get our program elevated. And remember not to rely on anybody, even the general Iowa population.
