I'm not going to lie, I'm a little surprised with the responses so far with so many people picking UNI. I honestly believe the game will come down to the wire with the final margin being 5 points or less either way. Really surprised by those of you picking UNI by double digits as I just don't see that happening with our style of play.

UNI has beaten four Top 100 RPI/KenPom teams so far and here are the margins of victory:
UT-Arlington (RPI 67/KenPom 90) - won at home by 4
SMU (RPI 72/KenPom 23) - won on neutral court by 3
NC State (RPI 80/KenPom 75) - won on neutral court by 4
UNLV (RPI 98/KenPom 73) - won in OT at home by 9

ISU is 40 in RPI/63 in KenPom (as of this morning) - comparable to some of these teams. UNI could certainly win, but I don't see them running away with it.

Jacobsen 6-2 vs. us, with the two losses being overtime, ISU graduated over 80% of our scoring, and you are surprised??? Can't really remember many ISU teams playing that good in the Big4Classic. Like mentioned before, at least the outcome doesn't usually predict further success down the road.

Hold on. Let me get this straight.

Are there really a lot of Cyclone Fanatics picking UNI? Are they that good?
I think its more ISU usually struggles with UNI, regardless of how good ISU or UNI is or is not.
ISU could be 15-0 and ranked #1 and UNI could be 0-15 and I would still pick a close game.
Thankfully, the results of this game really have no bearing on the rest of our season.

I think this will be a great game. Both teams are on an absolute roll right now. The Panthers always seem to play really strong basketball early in the year and then late in the year. UNI seems to already be "gelling" as a team, where as ISU is still figuring somethings out. Because of that, I am going to take the Panthers by <5.

If you think this ISU team is beating UNI, you've lost your ******* mind. Jacobson owns us. It's embarrassing and unacceptable (but not anywhere close to as bad as losing in football), but it's also undeniable. This is a good UNI team that will make the Dance, and has a second weekend ceiling. This is an ISU team that's talented, but still going to be a bubble team at it's best.

UNI 72 ISU 63

Also, it's a not a doom-and-gloom thing. A lot of great ISU teams **** the bed against UNI.

It’s not them, it’s us.

1.) We don’t play well against UNI and Drake. Luckily Drake has been a disaster recently, but far better ISU teams have **** their pants against these two.
2.) We’re not yet good imo.

Remember that KenPom and BPI don't have enough data points yet this year so they're still pullng data from last year when Iowa State would have been an overwhelming favorite...

Why would they pull data from last year? That seems ridiculous.

ISU struggled last year in the Big 4 Classic against a very poor Drake team.

UNI is a fundamentally sound team. Doesn't have the most explosive athletes in the world, but they play tough defense and limit your looks offensively.

If UNI is knocking down the outside shot at a good rate, i'll take them by 5 or 6. Conversely, if they are struggling from outside, i'll take ISU by 5 or 6.

Should be a great game. Hopefully Young and Lard can stay out of foul trouble.

I don't feel great about this matchup this week. Our first half has been so slow, picking up against the slow UNI team will be interesting. Hope we can nail some outside shots

I have no idea. I've never understood it either. Takes every team having around 14.5 games to get to the point where it's all this year. Usually around January 15th...

Too much going against ISU to pick them here. It's a neutral court, UNI has played better teams already, and they play a deliberate pace that is going to test the patience and discipline of ISU's young guys. Tough loss, good learning experience for the Cyclones. UNI 67 ISU 59. Hope I'm wrong.

I doubt the game will be that high scoring. UNI hasn't scored over 82 points in a game all year and that includes wins over Alcorn State, Chicago State, Wartburg and Dubuque. I don't see them scoring their season high against ISU. Also, UNI has only allowed over 68 points once and that was the season opener on the road against North Carolina (they allowed 86 that night).

UNI plays at a pace that ranks 350 out of 351 D1 teams (average of 63 possessions per game - Virginia is the only team with a slower pace, averaging 60 possessions per game). If the game ends with a score in the 80s or upper 70s I would put my money on ISU winning.

We beat UNI less than we beat Kansas over the past 10 meetings.

Seriously.
Looking at the last 10 game records (played within the last 10-15 years) UNI might be the only team we have a losing record against. Although, we still own them in all-time record. (36-13)

Actually, just looked:
The only team besides UNI we have a losing 10 game record with is Baylor (4-6) and we are tied at 5-5 with both Kansas and WVU.

I agree. If the score gets into the 70s then I like ISU's odds because it'll mean they'll have dictated the tempo of the game, got hot from outside the arc, or both. I just don't see it happening. The Well, from what I've heard and seen, is a poor venue for shooters. And UNI is always so damn disciplined. I expect the Panthers to slow things down to a snail's pace, clog the lane to frustrate Wigginton, and grind out a win. We'll see. Good early season test for ISU. I'll be pleasantly surprised with a win.

Hi all, I come in peace. I usually only make my way over to Cyclone Fanatic a few times a year, but certainly try to do so before we meet up in football or basketball (great job in football this year, BTW, hope you can beat Memphis and head into the offseason on a high note).

What can you tell me about ISU? Obviously you guys lost a lot from the last time we met 2 years ago (Morris, Niang, Long, McKay, Thomas, etc.) and I don't recognize nearly as many names as I normally do. It looks like Wigginton is living up to expectations so far as a top recruit. I'm having a difficult time figuring out what to expect out of ISU this game and this season looking over your schedule. Lost 2 games early (UW-Milwaukee at home?) but looks like you've been playing really well since then and have handed Boise State their only loss so far this season. Thoughts/predictions for this game and this season?

For a preview of UNI, they check all the boxes of a good UNI team of the past. Slow the game down, play good defense, good shot selection. We struggled last year because we simply couldn't hit shots, didn't defend at a high enough level, and couldn't rebound. We are greatly improved in the last two areas, shooting can get better as we still tend to have some 4-5 minute scoring droughts from time-to-time. Bennett Koch is the leading scorer and UNI will primarily run their offense through him and Klint Carlson in the post. If Carlson can make some outside shots to space out the ISU defense, I like UNI's chances in this one. The "sparkplug" to UNI this year has been true freshman guard Tywhon Pickford who is averaging 9.1 PPG and 10.1 RPG this season. The Panthers have been tested with a tough non-conference schedule, going 6-2 against D1 opponents. Their only losses have been to Villanova (currently ranked #1) and North Carolina (currently ranked #7). They've beaten some solid teams as well: SMU, NC State, UNLV, UT-Arlington.

Overall, I expect this to be a close hard fought game and I think it will come down to who controls the tempo. If UNI can keep this game in the 60s, I like their chances. If its in the 70s or 80s, I think ISU wins.

Either way, good luck the rest of the season after Saturday's match-up. I'm hoping for a good game with no injuries for either team.

64-60 uni. Hope I’m wrong

One thing about the Hyvee Classic that annoyed me last year. The amount of Iowa/UNI fans that stayed for the Drake/ISU game that were openly cheering for Drake. The fans in our section were nearly unbearable.

It will be interesting to see if it's the same way this year since ISU plays the later game again.

Eh. One ticket gets you in for both games, right? Then you may as well stick around and get your money's worth. Hok fans aren't going to see much good basketball this season so they should get it where they can.
