This was just what the ladies needed. A solid road win with the youngsters stepping up and making their marks.

Good write up!

I expected them to shoot a little better on the threes as I assumed they would game plan to stop the dribble drive and they did. Leaving someone open.

If Joens and Jackson can become more consistent we are a very dangerous team. 6-10 PPG from them would make a huge difference.

Joens is always in on plays practically the only one who follows the shot, but she is also probably the fastest of our regulars contributors.

You describe Joens quite well. She is just plain scrappy. Like her oldest sister she’s never afraid to get dirty.

She out hustles everyone on the court. Even when she gets sparing minutes, she’s busting her butt up and down the court. That kid has a ton of character.

I agree that the ball movement was the best we have seen all season. This needs to continue the rest of the year.

The two three zone worked well tonight. I thought that the guards seemed to get sucked down too low into the lane at times when the ball went to the corner, which allowed some open three shots on ball reversals.

Kelsey Jones was flying everywhere on her side of the zone and rebounded great from there. I do wonder if she might aid the disruption even more by moving up top at times. However, this would require having someone else that is agile down on the bottom of the zone.

Nice effort tonight and fun game to watch. Felt ISU was in control pretty much the whole way. Only time I got a little nervous was when the Bearcats closed it to 10 point early in the 2nd half. But the ladies made a couple quick baskets to get it up to 18.

Other than getting great scoring from other than Crooks & Brown, I was impressed with the defensive effort. Looked like we played a lot of zone and players were doing a solid job of communicating with each other.

This isn't new - Kelsey has been doing this all season. Surprisingly, CBF didn't bench her tonight when she threw up a pair of air balls, and she responded with a fine game.

Have people forgotten Aubrey Joens and how well she played the first third of her sophomore year, before falling out of favor? She had multiple double-doubles and played just like Kelsey, only smoother. It's a shame we've let players walk away - it'd be nice to have Aubrey's experience and shooting ability on this team.

I was at the game tonight. Cincinnati is not a very good team. We were significantly more talented than them. There was a good turnout of Iowa State fans. One UC fan told us after the game “boy you guys travel well”.

I was glad Bill let Joens play through some early mistakes without pulling her. She rewarded him. Good to see her get to the hoop some too. Hopefully she earned more playing time going forward. I thought Wilson did a good job running the point when Emily rolled her ankle. I personally think the ball moves better with her at the point than AJ. AJ played well and shot well tonight. She needs to shoot more. The zone looked like more of a 3-2 with the girl at the point playing at the free throw line. Often it was Wilson or Tanke. Looked like they wanted to keep UC out of the lane. Audi and Addy were under the basket. Kind of a junk defense. Wonder if we see it more or if it was specifically for UC.

Audi looks like her leg/knee is bothering her. Didn’t affect her play but you could tell during breaks. Addy couldn’t buy a bucket, but she didn’t get frustrated. Rebounding machine tonight. Lilly, Lily, and Alisa were all in the doghouse tonight. Pretty obvious there time on the court was going to be limited. I was hoping Lilly T would get some run in a blowout. Seems like there is some potential there.

Kelsey got beat off the dribble early in the game. Bill was pissed, but he didn’t pull her. She played well in extended minutes.

That’s my point and my compliment to her. Even though she wasn’t being rewarded with minutes, she’s still out there sprinting from one end to the other. Some kids would pout and hang their head. She didn’t. Kudos to her.

The zone is vintage ISU women's basketball from the late 90's and early 2000's. CBF played a lot of junk defenses during those years. I thought for the most part it worked, and you are taking your chances against a team that shoots 25% from 3 for the season.

Was great to see Jackson more aggressive at shooting it. Really need her to step up and be more consistent shooting the ball and be confident doing it as we are still looking for someone other than Brown and Crooks to be a consistent scoring threat and she is capable of being one if she looks for her shot more.

I keep seeing people saying we need shooters to be consistent I think we need them to SHOOT MORE and that will get them consistent. When you get pulled if you miss your first shot you tend to not take a shot so you can stay in the game and this hurts us. I posted earlier that we need to bring the ball to our half and if we have a miss-match in the post go there if not move the ball and find an open player like we did last night. See what happened, players stepped up and scored.

Agree, the problem is some of the players we need to shoot more just aren't putting up enough shots either it's them passing up looks or just not moving the ball around to get them looks. We've seen Harris, Jackson, Tanke, Joens etc. have a big game scoring then disappear for several games in a row and not get many attempts off. I'm looking at Jackson's game log and minutes are not an issue with her, she consistently gets 25-30+ a game but last night was her season high for attempts at 9. She's only attempted 5 or more shots in 5 of 12 conference games and scored in double figures in just 3 of those. She's had many games she played 25+ minutes in that she only attempted 3 or less shots. She is getting off .4 more attempt than last season but for an off guard playing 24 MPG (even more in conference play) to only be attempting 4.2 shots a game on average she needs to be more involved and getting closer to 10 attempts a game as we know she can hit the 3. Whether that is that on the coaching staff not running more offense through her or AJ not looking to be more aggressive at getting shots off or maybe its a combo of both but she seems like the most logical source of offense to be that 3rd or 4th scorer on the team.

Harris feels like the other one that they've given plenty of playing time to that could fill the scoring void too but she has the same problem, plays 25-30ish minutes as a starter and will have a big game then goes on a 3 or 4 game stretch she puts up a handful or less of shots per game. Tanke is a freshman getting inconsistent minutes so I can't be critical of her as it's tough to get shots off in short stints in the game unless you are wide open. Joens has had the same issues with not having enough minutes but lately even when her minutes have been in the teens she is finding ways in some of those games to get off a handful and no one questions her hustle and defense. We've gone through so many options with the 5th starter it's time we just give her that spot with 25+ mins a game and let her get comfortable because even if she has an off shooting night she still has a lot of value on defense.

Still think some of our woes come from trying to play 12 players too much early on. I get that its a fine line bringing in recruits and transfers and wanting to get them minutes to keep them happy but TJ has to deal with that too on the Men's team and he has a very tight 8 player lineup once conference season hits. It's about winning games and playing your best players at that point and maybe you dip into the bench for another player or 2 when there is an injury or foul problems but for the most part those main 8 know their roles and they get comfortable with them knowing that coach isn't going to bring another person off the bench if they have an off night. Maybe that is a flaw of Bill's right now with this roster but Ryan is the only senior so there probably are going to be some departures after this season regardless. Can't second guess rotation decisions with the fear that someone only getting 5-10 minutes here and there is going to leave after the season because they aren't helping you win games in this moment when it matters.
