The Future
Things look bright in Cyclone country. Unlike previous years, the sisters don't have a singular player returning that the team will focus around. When Carleton was set to graduate we had a young Joens on the team as heir apparent. This year we don't. That doesn't mean the cupboard is bare, but quite the opposite. We have three all conference players in Fritz, Ryan and Donarski returning. The later two I'm sure determined to show better than they did this year. The former is a light just beginning to show her brightness. We have gained experience for players like Zingaro and Diew. So, we have a solid core to build around. Losing Vick is a small dent as we really didn't know what she brought to the table.

The recruits are another top ten class that includes:
Jalynn Bristow – Forward, 6-2 from Texas. She was the Miss Texas player of the year, averaged 25.8 points, 13.6 rebounds, 3.6 steals and 1.6 blocks per game and led her team to a state title.

Addy Brown – Point Guard, 6-3 from Kansas. She is a high school All American and the Kansas Gatorade POY. She averaged 20.4 points, 10.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.6 steals and 1.2 blocks per game and was a two time 1st team Class 6A All State player. Very cerebral and an on floor leader/coach.

Audi Crooks – Center, 6-3 from Iowa. Many of us had the chance to watch her perform in the State tournament this year. She dominated in 1A and had 49 points and 16 boards in the final. But its what she did in AAU that caught the coaches' eyes. She is a big body with great hands. Prior to the state tourney she had scored 2659 points and had 1313 rebounds.

Arianna Jackson – Guard, 5-9 from Iowa. Averaged nearly 20 ppg, shot 46% overall and 43% from three. 84% free throw shooter as a senior. Scored over 1000 career points. Quick!

Kelsey Joens – Guard, 5-10 from Iowa. The next Joens. Like each of her sisters before her she is her own style of player. Finished with 1,647 career points. Two time first team 5A pick. She and Crooks are both IPSWA first-team picks. This year she averaged 24.6 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 4.0 steals playing for her sister.

Folks...there is a reason this class is ranked so highly. There is some serious talent entering the women's program that will both support and add to the existing talent. It's hard to say who will fill in the roles of departing players, but the added depth will be welcome. I expect Brown and Bristow to be immediate impact players, i.e. getting significant play time. Crooks has some development to do, but we will see her on the court as well. Jackson and Joens are wild cards. Both obviously have skills. We can hope that in year one they provide some rotation time for the guard court. The one I'm most excited about? Again a toss up between Bristow and Brown. Brown is a BIG point guard. Even if she moves to forward, it means she can move with and without the ball. Bristow is just a pure talent.

It's a good time to be a Twister Sister fan. There is a changing of the guard, but what I feel is most promising for next year is NOT having the one player everything rotates around. I much more like to think of the possibility of next year's team being a multi-headed beast that can strike inside and out and from multiple spots. The team is taking a Europe trip this summer that I'm sure will help gain some experience and sort things out. Personally, I'm just as excited for next year as I was this year...especially since there won't be any lofty expectations. Hang on....

I'm curious how the schedule will work with 14 teams. This report says we get BYU twice in basketball; however, that is only 14 games if you play everyone once and your "rival" twice. It sounds like we may know more in May on the bball schedule. I thought they would stick with 18 games, where you play everyone once and get five teams twice. Of course, if they do that, we would definitely get Baylor, Texas, and OU as part of the five we have to play twice. The Big 12 tries to manufacture a rivalry between Baylor and us.

I think we will hit the portal for a post-player now that we have a scholarship available.

"After 2025, Oklahoma and Texas will leave for the SEC" should read 2024 in the article after the two big shot schools got itchy and moved the exit date up.

Unfortunately, the 14 team schedule will cause for unequal scheduling...teams that end up doubling up against the top tier teams will have a tougher time than the teams with a lower end weighted schedule. See the BIG and SEC for how our schedule will likely work...at least for 2024. Throw in transfers and NIL and it is going to be tough predicting the conference.

Have any insights on Dawkins? Do people in the know feel that she is going to be a contributor in the future or are we looking at a potential transfer out?

I always look forward to your analysis. Thank for all your time put into this.

Glad we have only 1 more year of Texas. Looked up who they signed for next year and they got a 6'9 center coming in.

She's a project, not the next Cameron Brink. I think the only reason they are taking a flier on her is that she's that tall and from the Dallas area. Texas will need to figure out how to put the ball in the hoop next year if they want another piece of the Big 12 title.

Weird looking at the Top 25 classes (per ESPN) and not seeing Baylor. The new Baylor, LSU, is right there at #2. Odd that as strong as the top of the Big Ten has been the last few years their teams aren't scoring much of a recruiting coup, eastern schools and some Pac 12 are sort of leading the recruiting battle. Of course the usual elites are all there in the top 10.

Will be interesting to see who scores the big transfers. LSU's recruiting success last years was portal, this years so far it's HS so the ranking list ain't the be all end all, just the score at halftime.

Dawkins is a puzzle. Lot's of development to do if she wants to see floor time. She def has speed that she displayed a few times when she got on the court this year. The rest of her game appeared to be pretty rough. Will be interesting to see. As always, every player has a post season meeting with the staff and is told what they need to work on. If she puts in the time and effort we might see something emerge.

I like our freshman, but seems like next year is about 3 women: Donarski, Ryan and Diew. The first two need to be senior leaders and consistently be at their best. Lexi needs to find her shooting stroke. With Diew, while she could certainly start- just hoping she can be efficient on offense and be a consistent 8-12 ppg scorer off the bench.

Seems like we could definitely use a 3 pt shooting specialist and post out of the portal.

Consistency seems to be the key.

Fritz may be bigger than all those three. She plays with a fire and passion that we haven’t had for a bit.

Agreed, just to be clear. I think Fritz' trajectory might be clearer. I thought the other 3 might have had a step back year and look for them to get back on track.

It's tough because sometimes athletes peak earlier in their career physically or confidence can become an issue. As much as I love what Ashley Joens brought to ISU basketball, her coming back last season might have stunted the growth of some younger players because they could still defer to Ashley.

Brown is listed as a Guard in your write-up which is great then I get my tall guard.
Brown is a lot of things, but a PG is not one of them. I think it's a typo and he meant PF, not PG.

EDIT: I see he did mean PG, which is puzzling to me, because I've never seen anyone but the OP refer to her as a PG.
