I stopped using Twitter several years ago and have been monitoring alternatives. In recent weeks, Bluesky has seen another surge in popularity. It was originally a project within Twitter, but was spun off years ago and is its own thing now. Feels similar to Twitter w/ some improvements. Earlier this year it became open to everyone without invite codes. Signing up is very quick and you are up and rolling with Bluesky's servers. (You can also host yourself.)

IMO this is the tipping point, because I'm seeing a bunch of sports figures and news orgs are moving there and/or have started posting regularly. I think sports was something it was missing before.

SIGN UP HERE

Remember! Just like Twitter, you control your experience. Keep it nice by only following sane people and viewing the chronological feed. Many accounts are sharing Starter Packs, which are lists of people that they recommend and you can either follow individuals or the entire pack at once. Since this is CF, some sports examples I'm seeing over there:

@shutdownfullcast.bsky.social (Spencer Hall, etc. - writers linked in bio)
@sickoscommittee.bsky.social
@artbutmakeitsports.bsky.social
@jonbois.bsky.social

@rodger.bsky.social
@mattbrown.bsky.social
@espnbillc.bsky.social

I also joined yesterday - the first social media I've been on in years:

@kagavi.bsky.social

Stories to learn more (some issues with Threads also mentioned):

Hopefully this thread can be a spot for others to share sports and educational accounts to follow on Bluesky.

I opened this because I open anything posted by Kagavi. :)

But in this case, I don't know what you are talking about. :explode:

I hoped it was related to new research about Jack Trice. :D

Big sigh. :confused:

It’s noteworthy that Bluesky while obviously nowhere near the amount of users as other platforms, since the beginning of the month they’ve gained 2M new users.

How is this one different than all the other pop ups that have come before it? Isnt Bluesky just another attempt that will ultimately fail like all the others, that is this weeks flavor because one group is angry and think it will be different this time.

There have been countless others that have come before it, and no matter what side of an argument you are on, at one point or another, there have been attempts to push people to them. I can remember several "the next great Social media" posts on here. It wasnt that long ago there was an almost identical thread started about, I believe Mastodon, and poof it died.

The fact is rarely these new sites make even a small dent in the actual users of the mainstay sites. And after the desire to leave one site or another because of todays "yelling at clouds" the masses all end up going back to whatever SM they left because there is nothing going on at the new site they went to, and find the content they are looking for is really only available at the one they left.

Political or not, which side or not, its always the same story. There have been similar angry mobs on both sides of the political spectrum, that have tried to start a movement to leave one platform for another for one reason or another, so I am not arguing the politics of them one way or another, just that this appears similar to all the others before it.

This is from a person that rarely uses "X" as it is, but maintains an account there just to be able to see content shared from there on other platforms, and to look up a random post etc from time to time. For the most part Social Media is a cesspool and what platform you are on wont change that, and if one is better for a time it will eventually end up just the same.

I wish you luck, but I feel this will end the same way as the dozens of attempts before it, if not it will take a looong time to get to anything close to what you are looking for.
A big reason why these feels different is Twitter changing their ToS to allow AI to train off your posts. This pissed off A LOT of artists who've made the switch to Bluesky to protect their work. When content creators start switching that is meaningful and I think gives them real legs.

I'm telling you this is the tipping point. I've been watching all of the sites from afar for years, but hadn't signed up for any until now. Yes, other sites have had a surge of popularity, etc. and fade away, but there's also something that many sites miss - the vibe.

Bluesky is going to benefit from three things - degraded user experience at other site, inciting event of election, and now open to everyone. (The previous invite only allowed them to slowly ramp up the tech infrastructure.)

Here's more Bluesky accounts for you to peruse. I make no claim as to the quality of any of this - but there are definitely a lot of prominent names joining now:

SPORTS

Matt Norlander (CBS)
kenpom
Mark Cuban

Mina Kimes (who apparently got these four NFL writers below to move today)
Nate Tice
Danny B Kelly
Benjamin Solak
Gregg Rosenthal

OTHER

Jamelle Bouie (NYT columnist)
Timothy Burke (sports-ish)
Nilay Patel (The Verge EIC)

A side note: I do have some new Jack Trice stuff to share at some point in the future. It's very tasty stuff. Will definitely be on my site and Bluesky.

Gonna need all of you to lure other ISU people on the site. Rob Gray seems to be the Bluesky pioneer of the CF crew.

I'll be very curious to see how this plays out, and what a "tipping point" actually means in this instance. I highly respect Kagavi's opinion and thought process, so I'm weighing this more than I would if, say, gunner posted about it (slight very much intended).

But does this being the tipping point mean Twitter is at the beginning of the end and it's inevitable BS takes over as the top brand for this type of social media? Does it simply mean both will be able to coexist, and people will pick one or the other at about an even split? Will cross-posting be the norm? It will be interesting to watch.

The tipping point for me, personally, will occur when a non-insignificant amount of college athletes are on BS, but not Twitter. Burners, legacy media personalities, and even more modern CFB media replicating their efforts for the moment on BS isn't going to move me over unless a large chunk of them leave Twitter for good.

Just my two cents. Competition is a good thing for the consumer, which we all are. (yes, technically we're the product, but you catch my drift)
