Thoughts about next year?

Well I'll bite because I feel like looking ahead to the future is about the only way I can stop thinking about how many painful losses we've had this year.

PG: Bubu will probably start the year, but if we wanna play well in the Big 12, we need Morris to be good enough to start by then. Bubu is just too limited offensively to be a legit Big 12 starter. he's a great energy guy off the bench and plays good D, but if he's playing more than 15 mins a game we could be in trouble. Naz Long could also play some Point but I think he's more of a combo guard at this point.

SG: Thomas needs to come in and start from day 1. And if we're going to be good, he's going to have to average about 12 per game for us. Bluford will come off the bench and be a good scorer, but it's unrealistic to think he'll come in and be the next McGee. Tyrus is the best 6th man in Cyclone bball history IMO, and that's impossible to replace.

SF: I think Hogue starts due to defensive ability. He's not known as a good shooter, so that might limit his minutes some. We need somebody to play the Babb role, but again, expecting Hogue to replace Babb's lockdown D is unrealistic. SDW will be one of the first off the bench and average around 10 per game.

PF: Ejim. We know what we're going to get from Ejim at this point. If he can improve like he has his first 3 years, he should be a borderline 1st team Big 12 player.

C: Niang. We need Georges to get in better shape and he'll be damn near unguardable. We have to run our offense through him next year. Percy needs to take big time steps forward this year to even become a serviceable big. Hopefully Armardi can come in and provide some much, much needed athleticism and shot blocking off the bench.

All in all, I'm not going to doubt Fred's coaching ability at all, as all he's done so far is prove people wrong. I honestly am not even going to try and predict what our offense is going to look like, because I trust Fred will come up with something to make us competitive.

Is Bubu a decent defender and a good relief for our primary PG? Yes.

Is he a Big 12 offensive player or worthy of a scholarship? No

If I had to guess, I would say the NIT or perhaps NCAA bubble team is the ceiling. We could be somewhere around .500 overall and finish #8 in the league as our floor.

But there's a lot of unknowns still out there so there's no way to say for sure.

-There will likely be at least one player transfer out or not make it in (no info but this is often what happens).

-On the flip side, I wouldn't be surprised if we get 1-2 transfers that no one knows about yet. Can one of them play immediately?

-IMO, someone on the team that no one is talking about will develop into a pretty good player. Percy, SDW, or Naz may end up giving us more than we realize now.

-Niang and Ejim are locks to start and we know they will produce. How much better will they be? If Ejim improves as much as he did this year, he'll be pretty freaking good. Same with Niang. He can be a 18ppg type guy next year possibly.

-One of the jucos may be better than advertised. Just because their stats aren't overwhelming, doesn't mean their games won't translate better in our system, under Fred.

-Who will leave early in the B12?

-Can we beat either Michigan or Iowa in Hilton early in the year?

-Will Hoiberg switch and adapt his style of play, so that we cover some of our weaknesses?

Too many unknowns but I won't sleep on Fred, that's for sure.

Thanks SWCy13. So ISU is going to be a young team. I don't think young = bad by any means. I've been incredibly impressed with the athletic talent Hoiberg has brought to ISU and I do not doubt that he will get more out of next years team than most expect.

Fred led us to a .500 record in year one with probably one of the worst BCS teams around.

Don't doubt Fred.

There are 130 Big 12 Scholarship players. If you ranked them all, Bubu would be at the very least somewhere in the 70-80 range, at least in my book.

Are there 50+ players on scholarship in the Big 12 that are not worthy of a scholarship? That's a ridiculous statement.

As do 67 teams each year. You know there is only 1 winner right. Enjoy the ride and the future. Would you rather win the NIT?????

fine, give him a scholarship, it doesn't make him a better player or help our teams chances to win when he's handling the ball

We dance. We lose experience but add a whole lot of talent. We end up quite OK, go to the tournament, and feel crazy about 2014.

We will lose a game in December, people come out and say this is the worst Iowa State team in history & Fred can't coach. We will keep grinding away until conference season, then we will start to gel until we have or worst offensive output and lose to conference team we think we are better than. Then people will start to say we have no chance at the tournament, we will get a couple of big wins at home, one on the road, win one the Big XII tournament and be a 7- 10 seed in the NCAA tournament. We'll crush our first round opponent, then play the higher seed in an arena 30 minutes from their own campus and lose close...

That's usually the way it goes....

Being Fred's 4th, it's a key year. Wouldn't be surprising to see a step backward, but I've never been a Hoiberg doubter; no time to start now. Another upper division Big 12 finish would be huge. Just wanna keep building our expectations.

Probably will be picked for 8th in conference, ahead of TCU and Tech. will finish top 3-4. Critics will be out after tough (ugly) loss to Michigan and Iowa at Hilton, but once the team is gelled and Fred has things worked out, the fun ride begins.

How you can watch Niang's postgame interview and doubt this team for next year is beyond me.

We might be a young team next year, but with the juco transfers and strong recruits coming in along with Niang and Ejim, I think we will be pretty darn strong and compete for the top five positions in the Big 12.
