Catchers don’t really do this much any more. I think studies suggested it was counter productive.

And people can’t stand the soccer contact not because they are selling contact. They can’t stand it because players act like they’ve been stabbed, writhing in agony. Sell the contact, get the call, then let’s play. Soccer flops and acting is just so many levels beyond anything in sports in terms of selling a call.
Also framing pitches doesn’t really stop play or potentially swing the game to such a degree as a soccer flop does.

Umpires in general make plenty of bad calls with or without framing and it’s weird that we’re just kinda ok with human error on those calls.

Not sure about that since they’re testing challenge systems.

Yeah I’m not a fan of the challenge system, at the point just use the system the whole time and have the umpires report what the system tells them

But at least the system should get rid of some of the most egregious offenses

Media using “hero” and “courageous” when describing an athlete’s actions. It’s a game which exists for entertainment. Those two words apply only to those who voluntarily serve to protect the rest of us. Ex. military, firemen, police, EMT’s etc. I always cringe when somebody like Jim Nantz describes Rory’s performance as courageous. Give me a break.

There are different types of courage.

It takes courage to put the pads on and step on to the football field. There are a lot of young men like Beau Freyler who laced them up for your entertainment last year who has a list of injuries so long he’ll probably never be healthy again.

So give me a break too.

I'm for full automation and it's not because the umpires are bad, it's because calling balls and strikes is that hard. The vast majority of MLB umpires are freaking amazing at it but when the ball is coming at 100 mph and moving all over the place, it's damn near impossible to be right on every pitch that you only get one look at.

Not to mention that a part of the catcher's job is literally to try to fool the umpire on what's a ball and/or strike.

There's some weird deal about the 'human element' here that people romanticize. It's almost as odd as the notion that one should be able to speed until an actual human catches them.
People are goofy .

You are correct, there are different levels of courage. I trust you aren’t comparing putting on pads to step on a football field to the same level of a NYFD fireman running up the steps of the Twin Towers.

Of course not.

It does take more courage than what a lot of fireman do, as most of them will never do something like that. And that’s ok! We hope nothing like that happens.
