When a team is up multiple possessions late in a basketball game and they foul the other team going to the basket and the commentators say "that's the one thing you can't do there, foul and let them score with the clock stopped." As if giving up the layup doesn't also stop the clock while giving them 2 points. At least fouling forces them to make the free throws, with essentially having no effect on the time.

Also when a punt bounces straight up or backwards inside the 10 yard line and the commentators claim it was the backspin, or "he stopped it like a pitching wedge". It's not a round ball, it's egg shaped. The backspin has very little to do with where the ball goes when it bounces. It's almost entirely how it lands. It's probably 5% spin, 95% how the ball lands and trajectory.

Probably the only "must win" game was the ball game played in historic Central and South America where the losers were often sacrificed.
Visited they Mayan temples last year and the story we got from the guides there is that the winners were sacrificed to the Gods They considered it the ultimate honor. Talk about the power of religion!

Catchers don’t really do this much any more. I think studies suggested it was counter productive.

And people can’t stand the soccer contact not because they are selling contact. They can’t stand it because players act like they’ve been stabbed, writhing in agony. Sell the contact, get the call, then let’s play. Soccer flops and acting is just so many levels beyond anything in sports in terms of selling a call.

college basketball is nearly as bad as the worst soccer. NBA really got it under control and now the college game is pretty infuriating to watch in comparison.

The worst real contact in soccer is pretty intense compared to basketball because you’ve got full speed players attacking each other’s legs sometimes at opposite directions. Basketball contact is so light in comparison to me it makes a lot of the flopping even worse. NBA should really be commended for what they did. People talk about NBA losing interest, imagine if the flopping was still as bad as ncaa is.

I don't care for this either, but since I don't see it going away, I'd prefer that every timeout just advances the ball. I hate when the rules change at the end of games.

I’d love for ncaa mbb to copy the recent women’s rules with this exception. Seems weird to have some huge edge late game you don’t have the rest of the game.

The holder is specifically exempted by rule. Similarly the kicker is specifically exempted from offsides when he plants his foot for the kickoff since this is almost universally past the restraining line.
And of course Iowa State gets called for kicker being offsides. I can't recall what game it was, iirc it was an onside kick (?) (so maybe rule there is different)

In todays NBA
Couldn't compete in his era
played against plumbers
Whatever nonsense comes out when we try to compare players across eras. Can we just not?
We'll never know, there is no proof forthcoming and its all just the same shiz reheated.
Were they good? Yes. Would it be fun to see them again, Yes. Full stop.

No it was just such a terrible call that the announcers (who once again don't know the rules) surmised that it must have been called on the kicker since he was the only one who was remotely close to the restraining line at the kick.

That was a big part of it a few years back, that the best player was a huge flopper back then. The league really got it under control, nba is nothing remotely like the flop fest that is college basketball now.
Oh, its not..but...he still gets away with it over and over and over!!!

I always try to imagine if Xavier Hutchinson's "taunting" penalty was actually a penalty how many they would have to call a game. Every defensive back in the sport taunts more than that every single play. You'd pretty much have to just move every offense down to the one yard line and when an offense scores a TD they'd decline the taunting on that play, just by how cocky and taunting every defensive back on every team is on every play.

I've always thought it's weird that "framing pitches" is admired in baseball and any other kind of faking or deception like that is generally thought of as being not manly. I'm not outraged by it or anything, but it's no different than exaggerating contact in soccer or basketball and fans tend to hate that.
I like this one, because baseball is very nuanced in this regard. I absolutely love it when:

- guy is on first. Takes off (whether it be a steal attempt or hit-and-run) and the hitter ends up swinging and making contact. Let’s say it’s clearly a basehit, or even better one that is headed for the gap. Middle infielder (usually SS) makes a move toward second like they are about to receive a throw to start a double play. See…the runner might not know where the ball is. They’ve only heard the crack of the bat. Guy slides into 2nd, slowing his momentum. By faking, the middle infielder/SS has made it real tough for that guy to take an extra base or even, in the gap situation, score.

That is a just plain head’s up, deceptive baseball.

Waving is a tradition like no other.
:rolleyes::rolleyes: I guess if it gets them to stop throwing beer cans at opposing fans for a few seconds then it's a good thing.

It was especially annoying when they had only been doing it for like 2 years and were calling it one of the "best traditions" lmao. Ok sure I guess at this point it can be considered a tradition.
