I’ll start with, “ they can guard 1-5”.
Tell me who could have guarded AI and Shaq?

Just because you can guard a point guard, doesn't mean you can guard the most unguardable point guard in the league - seriously who could?I’ll start with, “ they can guard 1-5”.

There are a lot of really average and even poor MLB teams who manage to do this. But then again they might be 3-8 against the team, but they did beat them 3 times..."It's really difficult to beat a team 3 times in the same season."
Not when one team is more than just slightly better than the other.

AI would have fouled Rodman out in a quarter it he had to guard him.LeBron in his prime could definitely guard AI. Rose was at least as fast as AI and stronger and LeBron's defense in his prime is the only reason he didn't get a ring that year.
I don't know that he could have defended prime Shaq, but he probably could have held his own and he has the frame of a large nba power forward.
If you go the other direction, we saw an undersized Rodman play great defense on Shaq and Karl Malone and I think he probably could have covered AI or Rose.
I agree with you though for the vast majority what they really mean is the can defend most players. We're talking like 5-10 players max I've ever seen in 40ish years of watching NBA basketball.
I've only heard that relative to playing a team twice in the regular season, then matching up again in the post season. There are a lot of really average and even poor MLB teams who manage to do this. But then again they might be 3-8 against the team, but they did beat them 3 times...
“You don’t need to go for three here” when you’re down 4 points with 20 seconds left.

Similarly in football when a team is down two scores and driving on offense with 2 or so minutes left. Announcers seem to expect the offense to use their timeouts to preserve time. You always want to use your timeouts on defense to preserve time. That crap is exclusively college basketball commentators and it drives me nuts.
They'll say that down 5 or 6 with 20 seconds left, it's insane. NBA crews stopped saying that in the late 90s.
