I'm wondering if I have impingement...sounds like we have some pretty knowledgable people in this discussion...care to help?

I can no longer throw a softball or baseball...I can throw a football with little problem but I think the overhand motion of throwing a softball is the problem...

The pain is on the front of my shoulder and stretches down towards my bicep.

I've had tendonitis in my elbow and knee before and it usually goes away after icing it...this doesn't...and it's the dull aching pain that you can feel through your whole body...

I've been wondering if it was my rotator cuff because no matter how long I let it rest as soon as I try and throw a softball it comes back...any ideas?

I have had bouts with patella tendonitis for quite a few years. I got it from too many running miles on pavement and I used to wear ice bags on my knees under my pants at my desk at work to relieve the pain. Now I do all my running on softer surfaces like at the rec center and then in the spring I go to either the outdoor ISU track or the cross country course.

Thats not impingement... I have never really heard of any shoulder problems at the front of the shoulder...

Usually tendon problems are associated with a joint. If your pain is away from your sholder socket it sounds like a rotator cuff tear to me. I would have an MRI done on it.

Can you do a pushup without pain?

It could be a tear (odd that it wouldn't hurt throwing a football), but it might be bicep's tendonitis as well. Your bicep connects to the front of your shoulder and it is this connection point that could be inflamed.

What resistance moves hurt? Can you put your arm out palm up, apply resistance to that arm while trying to lift upward without pain? Chest exercises, shoulder exercises? (pushup, bench press, incline, military, etc.)

i have it in my knee and ankel.. and what everyone is saying is true.. use the bands.. they help alot.. but rest it first.. but at the same time.. dont just stop using it because that can make it worst.. ibprofen and ice is awesome.. but lot of band work once u feel comfortable just to build up the muscles

I haven't thrown a softball for about 2 years now so the pain isn't near what it was but push ups aggravate it as do bench press and military press...I try and run everyday and if I run awhile it starts to get sore from carrying my iPod.

The whole throwing a football baffles me as well...I've come to the conclusion it's because the top of my hand is to the outside when I throw a football and when I throw a softball the top of my hand is on top which causes the front part of my shoulder to be rotated a different way.

Had my knee scoped in Oct '06 after putting it off for a number of years. If it's just cartilage, get it done ASAP. I waited so long that a large chunk became lodged in the joint so I could barely bend my knee. It was extremely painful. Recovery time is usually pretty short, so there's really no reason to put it off. That's just my opinion.

My wife had her meniscus worked on, and she was still on crutches for a little bit - so I wouldn't say put it off for a long time but it might be a good idea to give it a little bit so you aren't on crutches on this freaking ice outside.

What about the test of putting your arm out palm up and applying pressure to that arm in a downward motion while you try to resist and lift upwards. does that cause pain in the front of your shoulder at all? If so, it could be a good indication of bicep's tendonitis, but as I mentioned earlier, it is just impossible to tell without a MRI.

I had pain in the front of my shoulder similar to you and went to a sport's medicine doctor. The test I mentioned above is the one he used to come to the conclusion I had bicep's tendonitis (even though the pain was in my shoulder). He put me on anti-inflammatories, gave me a resistance band to do some exercises, and told me if it hurt...don't do it.

I completely quit doing bench, incline, etc. for the past 4 months. I am now back to where I can do pushups and bench without pain, but inclines and miliatary press still hurt.

The palm up test doesn't seem to bother it...so it seems like it's basically when my shoulder is rotated a certain way (when the top of my hand is facing me) and I throw or have resistance...or it is repeatedly moving for a great length of time when I run...

I assume it bothers you when sleeping at night? In other words...it is hard to find a position to put your arm in without aggravating your shoulder?

It does sound like an impingement or tear to me, but I am not doctor (just had to deal with the issue myself and have a cousin who is a PHD in athletic performace who had an impingement in both shoulders).

I'd see an ortho or sprort's medicine guy for a professional opinion.

I've been putting off getting it checked out since the last time I played softball...mostly because I can still play flag football every fall and that's more important to me...

I think I may try and play softball this summer and see what happens and then get it checked out if it's still as bad as it was.

Getting old sucks...I played 3 sports in high school and played in college and never got hurt and in the last 3-4 years my body has started to fall apart...hamstrings, shoulders, etc.

Thanks for the help...you guys are better than WebMD...

If it is true subacromial impingement (rotator cuff getting pinched causing significant pain and often inflammation).

Most exercise can be continued avoiding overhead presses and bench press.

I did something to my left shoulder where I couldn't raise my arm above my head. I went to physical therapy and the PT worked on my shoulders and gave me some band and dumbbell exercises and some stretches. She told me avoid the same things you mentioned. She did an awesome job on my shoulders and neck!!

Started going downhill for me at 25 (broke a foot in softball). Every year it seems like my body comes up with something new to show its age.

If I could have applied what I know now to when I was in my 20s, I would have definitely taken better care of myself. Injuries that use to take 3-4 days to get better now take weeks. The last time I screwed my back up I didn't lift for 2 weeks. And that sucked...

Tendonitis can be a huge pain in the butt if you don't heal it well to start with. I got it in my left knee towards the end of my sophmore year of high school basketball. It bothered me for the better part of a year and kept me out of football my junior year. I wish I had laid off of it more right away to let it heal, but I finished out the basketball season. I also wish I had done more PT type stuff with it. On rare occasion it will still start to hurt a bit if I've been really active.

I guess the moral of the story is to rest it well right now and do so PT.
