The garage thread reminded me of something.

Anyone here have any recommendations for a good stud finder? The one I have does't work in my garage, I'm thinking the drywall is too thick.

TIA

Just use your knuckles and tap on the wall to sound it out. Usually works good enough for me. Never really saw the need for a stud finder.

That's typically what I do. If I'm really trying to verify where it is (ie hanging a tv on the wall), I'll run a 1/16" drill to make sure I've got a stud

I used this $20 Zircon to install my TV just a few weeks ago. There is a sheet of wood paneling on my wall and this did a great job of detecting past the paneling and identifying the edges of the studs.

Also have one of these, they work better than most as they have some adjustment to sheetrock depth.

Usually use of of these magnetic thingies to fine tune or verify by finding the screws/nails:
