Who do you see for this type of thing? I have been a mouth breather most of my life and I didn't think much of it but after reading this thread I am thinking I should go see someone to see if this could help. Thanks in advance, you can send me a PM if you want.

I had about 6-7 sinus infections in the last 12-18 months so I finally talked my Primary Care Provider into referring me to an Ear,Nose, and Throat specialist. They are the ones that finally recommended the procedure.

I actually got the go ahead from an Army Doc. while I was just away at training but they were not able to get me in while I was on Active Duty so I had to restart the process back home under my personal insurance. The one benefit of the Army Hospital was that I was able to get a CD of my CAT Scan to bring back with me and save that money. It is around a 6-8K price tag on the procedure but we were close enough on our deductible that it was worth it.

10 years ago I went to an ENT in West Des Moines (Dr. Porto I believe). He looked in my nose and said my septum was shaped like an "S" and that my nose had probably been broken a couple times. Both sides were about 80% plugged. I had the surgery within a couple days and once the plastic tubes were taken out, it was amazing how much better I could breathe. I spent most of my life until that point with a stuffed up nose half the time. I think I paid a $500 deductible. It was money well spent.

I feel like you. I didn't even know this surgery existed, but judging by the number of people here who've had it done, it must be fairly common. Seems like I might benefit from it too...

Just got back from having them pull out the stuffing. You told the truth on that, it sucked. Feels much better now, some air is getting through the nose already. I just can't blow my nose until he takes out the plastic splints on Thursday. I also get to start using the saline nasal cleanser late today or tomorrow.

You will want to start blowing your nose in a couple days because you will fill up with some crap. Be prepared if you try that because #1 it wont feel good. #2 have a big kleenex. You are also going to want to punch a hole in the wall every time you bump it fairly hard for about the next couple months.

Be careful without the packing when you bend over to pick stuff up. Your nose can start draining blood pretty easy without really feeling it.

My ENT at McFarland is now Dr. Reason Ford - it was Dr. Tom Smith for the last 11 years or so, until he retired last summer. My check-ups with Dr. Ford have been great - he's very thorough, and does more proactive testing than any other ENT I've had.

*Update*

Well somehow every morning I wake up I find that I have taken off the gauze under my nose in my sleep. This works great since stuff dried up and seemed to be doing well. Then I was lucky enough to start the saline rinse today and that is not fun. It did help moisten everything up again but then the nose just kept draining. I think I am supposed to do this 2X a day, going to try one more around 5 so it will dry up enough to head to a bar by 8 for the game. Anyone that is going to do this in the future make sure to ask your Doc for a rinsing kit. They put it together real well and has all the components you need and is pretty easy to make with the ready made packets.

Go ISU!

*I am also going to try and stay off the Oxycodone the rest of the day so I can have a beer or two with the game.*
