Iowa State’s wrestling team goes into this weekend’s National Duals tournament at Cedar Falls in good shape — academically as well as athletically — according to coach Cael Sanderson.

The National Duals are Saturday and Sunday at the UNI-Dome. This is the second year of a four-year run for the tournament in Cedar Falls.

Iowa State won the National Duals championship in 2000. Since then, the Cyclones have a 9-10 record in the tournament and have lost six of their last eight.

Pairings are to be announced Tuesday afternoon.

Iowa State, which is No. 4 by W.I.N. Magazine, has not competed since winning the team title in the Midlands Open Dec. 30. Sanderson said there has been time for work on technical things, healing up and a game of dodge ball.

“We just need to get a good week in and then go give everything we got on Saturday and Sunday,â€￾ Sanderson said.

Sanderson said senior Grant Turner of Johnston can expect much of the work at 174 pounds this weekend. Turner and junior David Bertolino have shared the varsity job at that weight this season.

Sanderson said Bertolino has an injury — he declined to state the extent of the injury — and there is a slim chance he’ll compete this weekend.

The Cyclones had a good first semester in the classroom, Sanderson said.

“There are a few kids that are still figuring things out,â€￾ Sanderson said, “but with all of our starters, there are no question marks. We haven’t lost anybody.â€￾

Very young team that is actually get better each time they take the mat. I like our conditioning and the future of the program. Should be a big weekend.
