When I lived in the Twin Cities, there are 2 Rocky Rococo's between St. Paul and Chicago. One at Wisconsin Dells and one just outside Madison.

We'd always stop at both for a slab of pizza, one on the way to Chicago and one on the way home. I love their big chunks of sausage and thick doughy crust.

I remember the one that used to be in Iowa City. Wish they'd bring it back...but my gut thanks them for not being here.

I remember as a kid going to Rocky's, the one next to the unidome in Cedar Falls. I loved that place...

I too LOVED that place. When I did a gig on a local cable access channel for Cedar Falls (I thought I as going into broadcast journalism), would stop in there for a fabulous pepperoni slice and then head off to pep band at high school basketball game. Aaaaaahhhh, the wonderful days of high school! I think it would be great to take a little 'vacation' and go back to a time in life where my biggest worry was making sure I had a couple bucks in my pocket for Roccky Rococo's! :cute:

Rocky's Place was the associated bar upstairs from Rocky Rocco's on Welch back in the 1980's. Not much of a bar, but had a pool table and beer on tap. What else did you need in college?

I loved their sausage and mushroom slice.

The funny thing about this pizza chain -- I find it pretty much universal that when you ask somebody about Rocky Rocco's, they almost always say -- "Yes! I loved that Pizza!"

My question is -- how can everyone have loved it so much, yet Rocky's locations have pretty much disappeared from the landscape (except in Wisconsin where the chain originated) I just don't get it. I'd love to know what happen. . I've often thought this would be a franchise to get involved in and bring back to central Iowa since so many seem to have such good memories of their pizza.

Might be the same thing that happened with Boston Market. I don't know too many people that disliked it. It just might have been one of those things where the chain overexpanded and its revenues couldn't keep up with its logistical expenses, even though people were fond of it, hence they shut down a bunch of the stores (which, IIRC, is exactly what happened to BM).

Probably because it was only good after midnight. All that cheese and those big greasy sausage balls... not as appetizing for lunch on your way to/from class..

That picture makes them look like sausage breakfest patties on top! I think I forgot just how big they are.

I'm starting to get hungry too..

I could have sworn that the Valentino's mall location was a Rocky's at some point, but I guess I was mistaken

They used to have one out in West Des Moines by the old Billie Joes Picture show building. Loved that pizza. Then again it was when I was a kid and I liked all pizza. So basically it could suck but I remember it really well. Seems like they had a Pan PIzza that was good.

On the occasion that I road trip to Milwaukee or that region...I do enjoy hitting the Rocky Rococo's in Madison! Loved it when I was in high school...not the greatest pizza ever but unique enough that I enjoy it more so than other fast food stops while driving!

Wasn't it "Pitcher"? As in, Billie Joe's Pitcher Show? (always thought that was a little clever) ((saw The Wall there one night absolutely blottoed))

I have a crushed red pepper shaker (still in use today) stolen, er borrowed, from the Rocky Rococo's on Welch Ave. in 1988 by my late friend Spud. Don't remember how or why we took it but it does have a little sentimental value 20 years later.
I believe you could even call it 30 years ago :)
