I went with Stoops, narrowly.

Even though McD wasn't assumed to be on the list for Matta successors, it's not impossible to choose an experienced Big East coach (with P5 experience, albeit unsuccessful). Stoops retirement seemed to come out of the blue.

I do wonder how much timeframe factored into the McDermott offer, maybe Ohio State assumed it couldn't land guys like Mack, Cronin, and so on at such a late stage, and make the contract work, although I'm not expert about coach negotiations.

It seems like if Smith knew Matta's days were numbered and there was a goal to make a semi-home-run hire among hot prospects, the decision to cut Matta would've happened in early April at the latest.

Just spit-balling with that stuff. I'm curious how this'll unfold.

I think it's McDermott, but I am with you as far as how things unfold. There may be a bomb to drop on the Stoops news.

Gotta say Stoops. Big Game Bob had it made in Norman and in the Big 12, and is only 56.

tOSU needed a coach late in the game, had to get who they could get. What made it surprising was the Hoiball rumor.

Stoops...I believe OU is supposed to be pretty good this year, and the B12 is going back to a championship game. Maybe allowing players to assault their girlfriends and then play even after saying he would have removed the kid had he known it had happened actually crept into his psyche.

The coaching carousel is always spinning and OSU probably needed a quick fix for a June firing. It would have been shocking if Hoiberg went there. McDermott's just another coach moving from place.

I'd say Stoops. Big 12 has a championship game now, so even losing at Ohio State means Boomer can realistically still make the playoffs. They went 11-2 last year, and could get to 11 or 12 wins again this year.

edit: Madguy beat me to the Champ game

Yeah Stoops retiring tool me by surprise. But Ohio state just as well hired Barney rubble. This is just crazy stupid.

Stoops by far. GMac has been winning at CU. He had seemingly bad luck at ISU, but he's not a bad coach at all. He brought in some really good talent at CU and will be able to elevate the talent level at OSU.

Stoops. He had a Heisman candidate at QB and a good team coming back. Plus he just agreed to a contract extension last summer. And it's hard to keep a secret in sports any more. If he had really been laying the groundwork for this for awhile and putting Lincoln Riley in place to be his successor, I find it hard to believe that we wouldn't have heard the rumors out of Norman.

Things just aren't adding up here. I think there's plenty more to this out of nowhere retirement.

Stoops for sure - young man in his profession, walking away from a very good team and millions of dollars. I agree with others that something is amiss, so will be interesting to see what falls out of this. As far as McD goes - OSU is flat our a Football School, but Mc will do exactly what they want - regular NCAA tourneys and will compete for a b1g title year in and year out (remember - he will be in the b1g and not the fast-paced BIG XII so his style will play well).

that an easy one. No question it is Stoops. McDermott getting another job after how well he has done at Creighton is not at all surprising.

I think it's Stoops. I think McDoormat's agent floated his name to tOSU as a means to boost his contract much more so than out of actual interest in the job. I am stunned that tOSU was actually interested but timing and desperation had more to do with that than anything.

The bigger shock in that whole situation for me was that Gene Smith handled it so poorly and put himself in that position in the first place.

------------

Around 50 million in the last 11 years and many millions more in the previous 7 years at least. Why again shouldn't he retire?

Stoops. The reason is because the rich can never have enough money. Many of them work till they are way past their prime. Maybe there is more to come.

Had to go with Bobby. Just seemed like he had a lot of fire power coming back, and had a chance to be Big Game Bobby one last time. Would think he would want one more shot after some of the bowl game losses over the last decade.

As several others have stated McDermott was a train wreck at ISU, but was actually pretty successful at Creighton and UNI.
