Agreed. This thread has gotten a little nasty. I believe this is supposed to be a fun debate.

Up next: Does the motion of the earth really cause toilet bowl spin? It doesn't. But someone will argue it does.

Nope, but it does cause the direction of spin - in the Northern Hemisphere it's clockwise, in the Southern Hemisphere it's counterclockwise...

Not true either. At least not for toilets. Large storm systems, yes.

Seriously. I don't want to threadjack the plane on treadmill thread. If this really needs to be debated as well, it should probably get its own.

Just imagining it turning the other way(I've never been in the Southern Hemisphere) makes me dizzy. I would probably fall of the toilet if I looked at it.

First, let me modify my prediction: Scorn directed at anyone who in any way gets under the skin of people on one side of the issue (e.g. me).

Second, you guys have got to relax.

I don't think they should be called views with a science question like this. There is one correct answer. One group is clearly right, and one is clearly wrong.

I will stick with my language. Essentially, a hypothesis is being tested, and a hypothesis is nothing more than an explanation someone has suggested for why something happens. Mythbusters will test a hypothesis. Until it is an incontrovertible fact, I think view will suffice, although hypothesis is probably a better choice.

Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies. Rivers and seas boiling. Forty years of darkness. Earthquakes, volcanoes... The dead rising from the grave. Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together - mass hysteria!!!

I fear you are correct. Is there anyone standing on the corner of Welch and Lincoln Way with a sign predicting the end of the world (at 9 Eastern/8 Central)?

It may impossible for Mythic Ghostbusters tonight to get the treadmill whirring up to 150-180 mph for a real plane liftoff. If they are using a miniature plane, it may be very small. What size does the trailer indicate for the plane.

150-180 mph speeds are required for large jets. Small single-engine planes are around 70 mph, and ultra-lights are even less...

Which hemisphere are you talking about?

Enough Northern/Southern hemisphere talk. Let's move to something really interesting: Eastern/Western hemisphire discussion.

Why is it always gotta be a hemisphere? Why can't the earth ever be divided into a quadrisphere? For instance, North America would be in the Northwest quadrisphere, South America would be in the Southwest quadrisphere, Eurasia would be in the Northeast quadrisphere, and Africa would be in the Southwest quadrisphere. I mean, after all, this scenario would still leave Iowa City as the pit of hell...

Due to the massive thread drift, the moderators have decided to close this thread. To ensure a thread's longevity, please keep to the topic at hand.

That said, I look forward to the post-episode discussion thread.
