Good luck to him, outside linebackers is a pretty small role I’d think

CW has talked about this before but conference realignment pretty much derailed the momentum Rhoads had going at ISU at the time. He took a roster that played some of the most undisciplined style of football I have seen under Chizik and won 7 games his first season and started to build some decent recruiting classes then the Big 12 nearly imploded and things dropped off dramatically after that. His resume as a coordinator is one many would be proud of. DC at Pitt, Auburn, and Arizona stints as position coach at UCLA and GA and analyst at Ohio State. You don't get gigs at schools like that if you aren't qualified.

Glad to see him back in college and wish him the best.

I overall like CPR but his defense at Arky is maybe one of the worst I've ever seen in my life. I don't think UCLA was much better.

I'm not saying it just because of your post or this thread, I used to watch specifically because of him:
I watched some Arkansas games only because of him. That secondary was garbage and played terribly.
I have no idea how he’s retained a job there. OU is an elite school and he’s Paul Rhoads (yes I know secondary only) at Arkansas bad.
While Paul is a good guy, his defense at Arkansas was really, really bad. I know UCLA is in a transition but that defense looks awful too.

Sounds like another coaching staff getting ready to be fired. Why doesn't the man choose his spots better?

It's crazy how coaches just keep getting recycled... even when they haven't proven to be very good anymore.

But still happy for Paul... great guy. He's made a ton of money in his career.

Curious how realignment affected it?

I know Baylor getting incredibly good during their mass rape years and crushing ISU every season didn’t help.

Just playing all of OU, Texas and a peaking Baylor/TCU every season instead of half of them? Knowing Nebraska and CU and Missouri all fell off in hindsight? Ok I think I’m seeing it the more I dig ;-)

National media speculation that ISU was headed for the MAC almost certainly didn’t help recruiting.

Wait wait wait hold up now. We weren't heading to the MAC.

We were going to dominate the Mountain West thank you very much.

:jimlad:

(Almost too hard to think about what happens to the Big 12 remnants had southern schools bolted.)

Can safely assume the uncertainty of what conference ISU might play in at the time had a negative impact on recruiting. If the Big 12 imploded ISU was in danger of possibly not being in a Power 5 conference. If you were a player deciding between P5 offers and you weren't certain if the Big 12 would stay alive or 1 of those schools would land in another P5 conference you can bet that other coaches were using that as a recruiting pitch and it negatively affected our recruiting during that time.
