Another from The Replacements

Westerberg has such a knack for adding subtle twists to a common phrase. In this case, addition of 1 word changes it from a cliche into something fresh.

“I’m not as ready as I’ll ever be.” (Approx 40 sec)

This song is chock-full of good lines, I’ll use the first one.

“If I could hold on to just one thought / For long enough to know / Why my mind is moving so fast / And the conversation is slow.”

Here's an old school country one for you. Radney Foster...
It's more than one kind of pain, more than one kind of theft
And it's bitter as the night sweet Jesus wept
She stole my heart, age stole the fire
They stole my prairie when they strung all that wire

Alan Parsons--I rediscovered this song shortly after my aunt passed away.

And someday in the mist of time
When they asked me if I knew you
I'd smile and say you were a friend of mine
And the sadness would be Lifted from my eyes
Oh when I'm old and wise

OK, something a little more upbeat. Yeah, I know the rhyming isn't on point, but this one takes me back...

Starin' at you takin' off your makeup
Wondering why you even put it on
I know you think you do but baby you don't need it
Wish that you could see what I see it when it's gone
I see a dust trail following an old red Nova
Baby blue eyes, your head on my shoulder

Watching the Yankee game. Yanks have runners on 1st and 2nd, no outs and analyst Dave Cone goes "Opportunity here". Me instantly recited:

And he said
Opportunity
World wide adventure
Money in the bank

So guess that meets the criteria. ;)

Another well crafted bit in a very popular Jackson Browne/Eagles hit:

"I've been running down the road tryin to loosen my load
I've got seven women on my mind
Four that want to own me, two that want to stone me
And one says she's a friend of mine"

Jurassic 5 has been one of my favorite rap/hip-hop artists for a long time, because I think they generally have good/interesting/catchy rhymes, with decent musicality. This is verse from "Gotta Understand" (done by Chali 2na, who might have the best rapper voice ever) is maybe not their most profound work, but is one that always makes me smile. The song is off their last album, which I don't think had much commercial success in general (I think the only single they pushed hard or got any radio play from was "Work it Out" that was a collaboration with Dave Matthews) but I've always dug its overall vibe.

'cause some of you women are men's mirrors
I know some women who dodge balls like Ben Stiller
Please understand, it's not to offend or seem bitter
But every queen, need a king wit her

I posted a few from the Mats already, here’s a couplet from Paul solo.

On “14 Songs,” Westerberg weaved a variation of the same wordplay into two separate tracks.

“This 9-to-5 bull*** / Don't let you forget / Whose suicide you're on. (approx 16 seconds)

“Whose suicide are you on?” (1:10)

Jurassic 5 is super underrated. But the true hiphop heads know what's up.

The National has a lot of one-liners that stick in your head...

"Didn't anybody tell you how to gracefully disappear in a room? "

"I'll get money, I'll get funny again"

"I still owe money to the money to the money I owe"
