Wrestling is here ladies and gentlemen. This season will be very interesting since we will get a chance to see if Jackson was worth our patience. A top five finish and a win over Iowa isn't in the cards, but will we have a winning dual record and a respectable finish in Des Moines? Only time will tell.

I am not doing predictions yet because we have so many young guys and it is early in the season. But I will say that I expect a solid win over Old Dominion today.

Today we match up against Old Dominion University. Here's my projected line-ups.

Code:
+--------+---------------------------+-------+-----------------------+-------+
| Weight | ISU Wrestler | Rank | Old Dominion Wrestler | Rank |
+--------+---------------------------+-------+-----------------------+-------+
| 125 | Ryak Finch | 15/15 | Jerome Robinson | 18/19 |
| 133 | John Meeks | NR/NR | Scott Festejo | NR/19 |
| 141 | Luke Goettl | 18/NR | Justin LaValle | 16/19 |
| 149 | Matt White or Luke Swalla | NR/NR | Alexander Richardson | NR/NR |
| 157 | Logan Molina | NR/NR | John Nicholson | 19/20 |
| 165 | Micheal Moreno | NR/NR | Adrin Taylor | NR/NR |
| 174 | Mikey England | 17/18 | Billy Curling | NR/NR |
| 184 | Boaz Beard | 16/15 | Austin Coburn | NR/NR |
| 197 | Kyven Gadson | 15/20 | Jacob Henderson | NR/NR |
| HWT | Matt Gibson | 17/18 | Matt Tourdot | NR/NR |
+--------+---------------------------+-------+-----------------------+-------+

At 125 Finch will go against another sophomore who was an NCAA qualifier last year. What I am looking for here is for Finch to get a solid win over a low ranked guy.

At 133 Meeks will get a decent, but not elite opponent. I look for him to show he is worth pulling his redshirt by getting a major. Or at least never having the win in doubt.

At 141 I look for Goettl to show us that his one loss was a fluke. This will probably be the match of the day and here I look for Luke to show improvement from last year and to demonstrate that Nickerson is earning his salary.

At 149 White or Swalla is facing a true freshman NJ champion. If Mayfield was good to go I would expect a win. With either of those guys I just expect effort and hoping to hold it to a decision. I hope we get Max back soon.

At 157 Nicholson from ODU was an NCAA qualifier last year. I think Molina has what it takes to get a win here. Beating guys like Nicholson will be important for our overall dual and NCAA record.

At 165 Moreno will be facing a redshirt freshman with a subpar pedigree. I expect a solid win.

At 174 England or Tanner Weatherman will be up against a mediocre wrestler. I expect a dominating win.

At 184 Beard should dominate. No excuses.

At 197 Gadsen or Shaffer should dominate. No excuses.

At Heavy Gibson should do the same against a 197 pounder who is wrestling up for ODU.

Overall the bottom weights are a great test for our young guys and we should dominate the upper half of the lineup.

Re: ***Old Dominoim Preview/Gameday Thread***

I think our first 3 weights and last 3 weights are wildcard guys that could have great seasons and take ISU to a level we haven't been to in a few years, but I don't know what to expect from the middle weights. This is the critical year for Jackson, I thought we have wrestled more aggressively under Jackson than Sanderson, but it hasn't translated to victories. There is lots of room for development in wrestlers when they hit college, so these should be Jackson's guys, and the guys he inherited should be counted as being developed by him and his staff at this point, so it's make or break time for him. I hope it's "make" because I like him and I think adding Nickerson was much needed, so let's get it started.

The coaches poll (which is more of a dual strength poll than the others) has ODU 25th and us unranked.

Odd we are not ranked as a dual team as we should be a better dual team than tourney team. Thanks for the writeup

We haven't had a dual yet and have a lot of first time starters. If we are still unranked in January I'll be worried.

Matt White and I went to the same high school and know each other pretty well. Hope he does well today if he gets a shot.

Bad first period for Mikey. He showed no aggression and got taken down with about 20 seconds left.

Mikey ties it up, cuts the guy to go for the win, and gets taken down. Then injury time so the ODU wrestlers got to pick down. Disappointing start to the dual. Mikey goes down 3-7.

Beard gets a takedown into a cradle. Up 5-0. This is much more what I was expecting to see.

As an aside, I really hate how "funk" has become so prevalent in wrestling.

Beard wins it 10-2 with 3 1/2 minutes of riding time. Good match that was never in doubt, though it would have been nice to see Beard push the action more. No complaints.

First period ends 0-0. Not a lot of action. I'm not surprised to see Gadson be a bit tentative.

Second period ends with Gadson down 0-1, riding time not a factor. He showed a little more aggression but no real shots or action. Gadson down to start the third.

Reversal! Gadson up 2-1. It should have been an escape and takedown, missed call by the ref.
