So far I have only watched the pilot - I have the second episode on TiVo - but color me unimpressed. The original was classic late 60's/early 70's TV. Jack Lord captured a cool collected 70's man that used brains rather than brawn to overcome the criminal element, and the viewer was constantly reminded of this by his neatly pressed suits and perfectly coifed hair even in sunny Hawaii. His intellect was his weapon of choice and he had his subordinates to provide the brawn. That made it that much better when he had to mix it up directly himself. The show itself was cutting edge at the time as much as the theme music was.
Jack Lord also portrayed McGarrett with immense passion, and an "I'm taking you down and you know it" attitude. And as you mentioned, the original was cutting edge in many regards, one being the use of CSI ("the lab").
In many of the cop shows today, the detectives always seem to get a lucky break with cell phone records, or from the facial recognition software, or the DNA database. The writers didn't have those easy outs back then (finger prints was about it), so more footwork and reasoning were required. The original
Law and Order and
LO Criminal Intent were more like that, which is why I liked those shows.
McGarrett's firearm skills in the original
Hawaii 5-0 are epic. It makes me chuckle the way he often picks off the crooks with his little revolver. Also, as plagued many shows from that era, the stock footage discontinuities are bit annoying (i.e. HPD chasing a criminal in a one model of car going into a corner and coming out of the corner in a different model of car). However, the plots were solid, and Jack Lord played the part masterfully.
