I'd be happy with 7-2 in Hilton after last night. This conference is unbelievably tough, last year we handled them pretty easy in Ames with Nowell and Johnson.

The spying/filming/texting was really helping us crack their complex "launch a contested prayer-three at the end of the shot clock and hope for the best" offensive strategy.

Defensively we didn't give up open threes from over rotation, as we are prone to at times. Their threes were generally well guarded, but we gave up way too many points at the rim, especially in the first half, especially with helping / trapping on drives to the basket and the rotations being slow.

We still ended up forcing a 21% TO rate, which is where we need to get to. And even though they seemed to make all of them in a row, they ended up 8-24 from 3, right at our average of what we give up.

Based on Williams tweet about K-State coaches yelling "cheating mother-fers", I had to break down the handshake encounter.

My amateur lip-reading has Tang saying "I'm not accusing you" at the start of this video. Then he points toward the basket where the managers/floor sweepers sit and says something to the effect of "two kids (or guys?) under the basket". Then he makes that motion with his right hand that appears to mimic someone recording something on their phone and you can see he mouths the word "video", then he makes a texting motion and you can tell he says "texting" before pointing up higher into the stands.

So he thinks the managers are recording their huddle and texting it to... someone? Isn't one of the key features of a huddle is that no one can see inside of it? What video are they taking? And even if it were true, what could the managers possibly have captured and who could they be texting it to during the game? Seems incredibly bizarre and far-fetched. Also, imagine your head coach being worried about this DURING THE GAME. Loser behavior.

Hear me out, and I'M NOT ACCUSING ISU OF ANYTHING...but if KSU made "huddle changes" at halftime and started putting that manager at half court to watch the ISU managers, it's possible ISU was doing something to communicate what was happening in the KSU huddle. But like you said, I'm not sure what sort of information you could get out of a huddle or how you could relay that information to the coaches fast enough to make those adjustments before the huddle breaks.

Yeah, I think they were 1-8 in the first half, then 5-6 in the first half of the second half, and finished out the last ten minutes 2-10 with one of those being a garbage bucket after the game was mostly decided.

Agreed. Part of the issue defensively is we maintained poor spacing at times, being we were too close to the ballhandler. At times that'd been a persistent issue under TJ as it can lead to cheap fouls or getting easily beat on a quick first step. The latter happened a lot last night.

KSU was cold on the first half, hot for the first 80 percent of the second, then cold at the end. In general our 3 D was good and when we gave up open looks it was off an initial dribble penetration.

Hopefully someone at the game can back this up, but I think it’s just that the ESPN2/U/+ mics are pretty awful. When they bring in big ESPN with the best mics, it tends to sound like it does in person.

Lipsey, Momcilovic, and Gilbert all went for 34, 32, and 34.. though.

I'm don't necessarily buy into all that anyway, because these guys are 18-22 year old athletes. Maybe if they're playing back to back to back games there could be some downfall in energy.

The test will be if they can keep things up enough through February. Last season saw a huge drop and part of that may have been lack of depth/energy but part also may have been that teams figured out how to beat their defense vs. real talent level.

The dynamics of perhaps having to appease Grill with his issues may have played a part too.

A few guys played lots of minutes in the bye games but those were often very spread out.
